Shields are a useful tool that were added in the 1.9 Combat update for Minecraft. You can put them in your offhand and use them to block incoming attacks and deflect arrows. Additionally, on Java Edition, you can decorate shields with banners, allowing for each player to have unique, individual shields. Shields are pretty easy to make, requiring only a crafting table, an iron ingot, and 6 wooden planks.
Steps
Part 1 Part 1 of 4:Gathering Materials
-
1 Get 10 wooden planks. If you already have a crafting table, you'll only need 6 wooden planks. Wooden planks can be obtained by chopping down trees for logs, opening your survival inventory, placing the logs in 1 slot of the crafting space, and turning them into planks. Each log produces 4 planks. -
2 Make a crafting table. Open your survival inventory and fill all 4 crafting slots with a wooden plank to make a crafting table. Advertisement -
3 Obtain 1 iron ingot. Iron ingots are primarily obtained by smelting iron ore, which can be found from Y-levels 0-63 in all biomes[1] . - Iron ingots may also be obtained by killing zombies and zombie variants, or by looting chests in dungeons, mineshafts, desert and jungle temples, buried treasure, shipwrecks, villages, strongholds, pillager outposts, woodland mansions, nether fortresses, bastions, and end cities[2] .
Crafting a Shield
-
1 Open a crafting table. Face the crafting table and right click it. - If you're playing on Pocket Edition, tap the crafting table.
- If you're playing on a console or with a controller, press right trigger.
-
2 Craft a shield. Place the iron ingot in the middle of the top row, with a wooden plank on both sides. Then, fill the middle row with wooden planks and place the final plank in the middle of the bottom row. -
3 Place the shield in your inventory. Click or tap the shield and drag it into your inventory. Advertisement
Decorating a Shield
-
1 Gather dyes. If you are playing on Java Edition and want to decorate your shield, you should gather a variety of dyes. You can make dyes in a variety of ways, from using flowers, smelting items, combining dyes, and using other natural ingredients. Below is a list of the ingredients you can use to obtain the various dyes: - Black dye: Wither rose, ink sacs.
- White dye: Lily of the valley, bonemeal.
- Gray dye: Black dye + 1 white dye.
- Light gray dye: Azure bluet, oxeye daisy, white tulip, black dye + 2 white dye, gray dye + white dye.
- Red dye: Poppy, rose bush, red tulip, beetroot.
- Yellow dye: Dandelion, sunflower.
- Blue dye: Cornflower, lapis lazuli.
- Light blue dye: Blue orchid, blue dye + white dye.
- Cyan dye: Blue dye + green dye.
- Orange dye: Orange tulip, red dye + yellow dye.
- Green dye: Cactus.
- Lime green dye: Sea pickles, green dye + white dye.
- Purple dye: Blue dye + red dye.
- Magenta dye: Allium, lilac, purple dye + pink dye, red dye + blue dye + white dye.
- Pink dye: Pink tulip, peony, red dye + white dye.
-
2 Make a banner. To make a banner you'll need 6 wool of the same color and a stick. Wool can be obtained by shearing sheep or by using 4 string to fill a 2x2 crafting space. Sticks can be made by placing 2 wooden planks on top of each other in a crafting space. To make a banner, open a crafting table and fill the top and middle rows with wool of the same color, then place a stick in the middle of the bottom row. - The banner will be the same color as the wool you used to make it. You cannot change the base color of a banner after making it, so be sure to use the color of wool you want while crafting it.
- White wool can be dyed with any other dye to make colored wool. You can't dye already colored wool, however[3] .
-
3 Make a loom. A loom can be made with 2 string and 2 wooden planks. You can get string by killing spiders or cave spiders, or by breaking cobwebs. Open a crafting table or your survival inventory and place 2 wooden planks next to each other on the bottom, then 2 string directly above each plank. -
4 Get any banner patterns you want. There are 6 banner patterns in Java Edition that can be obtained through crafting, trading, and looting chests. Banner patterns are not needed to make banners, but they are used to make exclusive special patterns on banners. Below is a list of the banner patterns available and how to get them[4] . - Banner pattern thing: Obtained by combining paper and an enchanted golden apple. It makes the former Mojang logo on a banner.
- Banner pattern skull: Obtained by combining paper and a wither skeleton skull. It makes a skull and crossbones pattern.
- Banner pattern creeper: Obtained by combining paper and a creeper head. It makes a creeper face pattern.
- Banner pattern daisy: Obtained by combining paper and an oxeye daisy. It makes a daisy pattern.
- Snout banner pattern: Obtained by looting chests in bastions. It makes a piglin snout pattern.
- Globe banner pattern: Obtained by trading with master level cartographer villagers. It makes a cube shaped earth pattern.
-
5 Place and open the loom. Right click on a block to place the loom, then right click the loom to open it. -
6 Apply patterns to your banner. Place the banner, a dye, and/or a banner pattern in their respective slots in the loom interface. In the middle is a section showing the various patterns available. Click on one and look to the right to see a display of what that pattern and color looks like on a banner. When you want to apply the pattern, drag the banner that appears in the bottom right slot into your inventory. - You can apply up to 6 patterns on a banner. You can get more if you use commands.
- If you don't know what design you want your banner to have, or you don't know how to get the design you want, try searching for banner designs on the internet. You can check sites like Planet Minecraft and other Minecraft forums for banner designs.
-
7 Put the banner on the shield. Open your survival inventory or a crafting table. Place the shield and banner anywhere in the crafting interface to apply the banner to the shield. Advertisement
Using Shields
-
1 Equip the shield. Open your inventory and drag the shield into your offhand slot. The offhand slot is next to your player icon and has a mini pixelated shield icon in it. When you equip a shield you should see the shield in your offhand when playing. -
2 Use the shield. You can use the shield by pressing right click in Java edition, or by sneaking in Bedrock Edition. -
3 Block attacks. When using the shield, you can block attacks and deflect projectiles. Melee attacks, tridents, snowballs, eggs, shulker bullets, pufferfish spines, fireballs, llama spit, creeper explosions, TNT explosions, ravager headbutts, and ravager roars can all be blocked. All arrow types are deflected, bouncing off the shield, and they are able to hit other mobs[5] . - Shields cannot block arrows from crossbows that are enchanted with piercing, effects from splash or lingering potions, beam attacks from guardians, ender dragon breath attacks, evokers' fangs, teleport and fall damage, hits from axe-wielding mobs and players that are sprinting.
- In Bedrock Edition, shields will block direct damage from tipped arrows and shulker bullets, but the player blocking will still get the effect of the arrow/bullet.
- In Java Edition, shields will block TNT explosions from TNT that was lit by another player, but will not block explosions from TNT set off by redstone or by the player that is blocking.
- If you are hit by an axe while blocking, there is a chance that the shield will be disabled for 5 seconds.
