The Minecraft Recovery Compass was introduced in the 1.19 The Wild Update, and is a craftable item that can be used to help find where you died in Minecraft.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Recovery Compass, including how to craft it and how to use it.

What does a Recovery Compass do in Minecraft?

When held by a player who has recently died, the dial on the Recovery Compass points to the location of their death.

However, if you try to use the Recovery Compass in a different dimension to the one you died in, like the Nether or The End, it won’t be able to point to your death location and so the dial will simply spin around.

Don't take your Recovery Compass with you on an adventure! You'll drop it on death, so won't be able to use it to find where you died. Instead, keep it safe somewhere close to your respawn location.

How to Make a Recovery Compass in Minecraft

To make a Recovery Compass, place a regular Compass in the center square of a Crafting Table and surround it with 8 Echo Shards.

You can craft a regular Compass by placing 4 Iron Ingots around 1 Redstone Dust.

Echo Shards can be found inside chests in Ancient Cities in the Deep Dark Biome, a rare underground biome that was also introduced in the 1.19 The Wild Update.

While you’re exploring in the Deep Dark, take care to avoid stepping on Sculk Sensors and activating Sculk Shriekers. When you set off any Sculk Shrieker, your ‘warning’ level increases by 1; at level 4, a fearsome Warden will be summoned.
