Sure, a baked potato in the oven is great, but have you tried them on the grill? Use this method for your backyard grill or even when you're out camping. The potatoes cook up just as fluffy as they do in the oven, but have the bonus of smoky flavor. Serve them with grilled chicken wings or grilled steak, grilled corn, and watermelon salad.
Do you boil potatoes before grilling?
We like to give the potatoes a head start in the microwave before grilling, which allows them to cook evenly and then absorb the delicious smoky flavors once on the grill.
How long do you grill baked potatoes for?
It doesn't take too long to grill a baked potato. Between 45 minutes and 1 hour is long enough to get perfectly grilled baked potatoes.
Do you grill potatoes on direct heat?
Direct heat is great for grilled baked potatoes. Around medium or 350º is best.
Do you need to wrap the potato in foil?
Though wrapping baked potatoes in foil is not required in the oven, it's recommended for the grill, which protects the potatoes from the flames and makes them easier to handle.

Ingredients
- 4
russet potatoes (about 8 oz. each), scrubbed well and patted dry
- 1 Tbsp.
extra-virgin olive oil
- 1 tsp.
kosher salt
- 4 oz.
Cheddar cheese, shredded or thinly sliced
Sour cream, for garnish
Crumbled cooked bacon, for garnish
Sliced scallions, for garnish
Sliced chives, for garnish
Directions
- Step 1Heat grill to 350º. Prick potatoes on all sides with a fork.
- Step 2Place the potatoes on a microwave-safe plate and microwave on medium power for 8 minutes. Let cool 1 minute, then rub the skins with oil and season with salt.
- Step 3Wrap each potato separately in aluminum foil. Pierce the foil several times with a fork, then place on the grill. Close grill and cook for 45 minutes to 1 hour, until you can easily insert a fork through the foil into the center of a potato.
- Step 4Remove potatoes from grill and let cool 2 minutes. Open packets and make a 3” deep vertical slice in the top of each potato. Use a spoon to widen the indentation. Top with cheese and other desired toppings, then serve.
