There are thousands of color options when mixing acrylic or oil paints. A popular color for warm, natural paintings or decorations is burgundy, a rich reddish-purple that has a royal chic look. The way to get a classic burgundy without spending money on pre-mixed paint is to mix colors you already have in your paint kit. Whether using acrylics or oils, these simple steps will result in a rich, luxurious burgundy that can be used for paintings, home décor and more.

Step 1

Start by squeezing your cadmium red, ultramarine blue and true black paint onto your painter's palette. Keep in mind that you will be mixing about 4 or 5 parts red, 1 or 1 ¼ parts blue and ¼ true black.

Using your palette knife, scoop the ultramarine blue into the red and blend completely. You may need to add more or less blue depending on the shade of burgundy you desire.

Using your palette knife, scoop the true black paint into the red and blue mixture to darken. You may need to add more or less black depending on how dark you want the burgundy.

Tip

Another good way to blend is by using paint blending cups that can be purchased usually in packs of 20 or more at any craft store. These can also be reused.

Warning

Do not use a paintbrush to blend your paint, unless it is an old junk brush. Mixing paint with a paintbrush will destroy the bristles.
