Learn how to make an Easy Origami Water Bomb with just a single piece of paper and a few simple folds. They're a quick and fun activity to do with the kids this summer.
Origami Water Bomb.
Now that summer is here I wanted to share a fun craft for those hot summer days: Origami water bombs.
Did you know you can make water bombs out of paper? They’re really easy to make and a good environmentally friendly alternative to traditional water balloons.
Also known as origami water balloons or origami cubes, this traditional origami water bomb can be used in a good old-fashioned water fight, to play catch or even to throw at targets in an outdoor game,
They can also be turned into a pretty paper garland or used to make paper lantern fairy lights. Decorated and turned them into pumpkins at Halloween, apples for back to school or even bunnies at Easter.
They’re such a quick and fun project. A great one for kids of all ages as well.
Origami Water Balloon.
If you’re new to origami this water bomb is a good place to start. It’s made using an origami water bomb base (sometimes called the paper balloon base) and is the starting point for a lot of origami models.
It's very similar to the square base except it uses mountain folds where there are valley folds and valley folds where there are mountain folds.
Once you’ve mastered the water bomb base you’ll be well on your way to making one of the following.
Easy Origami Butterfly (another good one for beginners).
Blow-up Origami Bunny Rabbits.
And the classic Origami Lily.
Paper Water Bombs.
A couple of things to remember. Water and paper are not the best of friends. Depending on the type of paper you use, you’re probably only going to get around 10-30 seconds to throw your water balloons before the paper starts breaking down.
If you’re using origami paper, old newspapers or magazines you can double up to make them last longer. Alternatively, you could use thicker paper or a thin cardstock like scrapbooking paper to give you the optimum time to aim!
Supplies:
Origami Paper
I used standard origami paper that is coloured on one side and plain white on the reverse.
I normally recommend using origami paper for any paper folding project but in this case, any kind of thin paper will work. Here are a few alternatives that you probably already have on hand.
Regular Printer Paper,
Newspapers,
Gift Wrap,
Colouring Book Pages,
Old Books.
Once you've mastered the basic steps, you can experiment with different paper sizes and colours to create a whole rainbow of colourful water bombs! I used to love making extra large ones out of folded newspaper as a kid.

How to make an Origami Water Bomb.
1. Fold your paper in half with the coloured side on the inside. Open out and fold in half again.
2. Open out and fold along both the diagonals this time with the coloured side on the outside.
3. Collapse the paper along the folds and fold it down to make a triangle. This is your water bomb base.
4. Fold both the bottom corners up to meet the center. Flip it over and do the same on the other side.
5. Now fold the 2 side corners in to meet in the center. Flip it over and do the same on the other side.
6. Take the top flap and fold it down using the previous fold as a guide. Take this triangle and fold it back on itself to make a smaller triangle.
7. Lift the small folded triangle and open up the pocket that is underneath. Slide the small triangle inside the pocket.
8. Do the same for the 3 remaining flaps.
9. On one end of your origami water bomb you should have a small hole in the bottom. Inflate the balloon by gently blowing into the hole.
10. Fill with water and throw!
