A paper towel is an absorbent textile made from paper instead of cloth. These disposable type of towels have almost the same purposes as conventional towels, such as drying hands, wiping windows, dusting and cleaning up spills.

How to Process a Paper Towel

As in other tissue paper products, the first thing we need is the pulp. Different types of pulps can be used based on the demands or the wishes of the customers. Once the pulp is ready it is processed by using a Yankee Dryer. The Yankee Dryer dries the pulp on a roller and scraps the paper down to the wanted thickness. When the drying and scrapping processes are done, it is time for creping and embossing.

Creping is an important step, especially for paper towels. During the process, the paper gains flexibility and open areas for water absorbency emerge. The internal micro-fold structure creping creates is crucial to allow the paper towel to absorb and hold moisture.

Next comes the embossing step. Other than giving the product a nice look, embossing helps the tissue paper have spaces in between the layers like a quilt. The top of the paper towel is modified using a shaped surface rather than a flat one. This process creates raised areas on the tissue paper, opening spaces to absorb and hold water.

The quality of the mixture, quality of the bond, and type of resin make up the composition of the paper towel. The air pockets allow the paper towel to absorb water and other liquids. But there is more to affect the absorbency of tissue paper. Each cellulose fiber in the paper is made of sugar molecules. When water molecules hold on to the cellulose fibers, can readily absorb the spill. This feature allows paper towels and toilet paper to absorb a certain amount of liquids without breaking down.
