How was the talking voice enabled?
You most likely accidentally pressed the asterisk (*) button on the remote control rapidly 4 times. Doing so toggles the “Audio Guide” feature. On some models, this is called “Screen Reader”. This feature exists to help the vision impaired, allowing them to learn what’s on the screen.
Fix 1 – Turn Off Audio Guide / Screen Reader
To disable the talking voice, simply press the asterisk (*) button rapidly 4 times.
For some models like the TCL Roku TV, you will need to press the asterisk (*) button once while a video is playing, select “Accessibility” > “Screen Reader“, then toggle the setting to “Off“.
Alternately, you can navigate to the setting using the menus. It’s under “Settings” > “Accessibility” > “Audio Guide” or “Screen Reader” > “Off“.
Fix 2 – Change Audio Track
If it seems like the audio guide won’t turn off even after using Fix 1, it might be because audio description is enabled on the content you are watching. Some Roku channels have a feature where the audio track contains and audio description. These tracks are intended to be used by the vision impaired. It makes the channel describe the scenery in the videos as you watch.
You can turn this feature off with these steps:
- Start playing a video in the channel where you hear the narrator speaking.
- Press the * (asterisk) button on the remote.
- Change the “Audio Track” to an option that doesn’t include “Audio Description“.
