Making toast in the oven is so simple and easy – and something that you probably don’t think about until you don’t have a toaster handy, OR you are wanting to batch toast a lot of bread for a large breakfast. You can make a lot of toast at one time using this method.
If you’re looking for garlic bread or Texas toast, those are two other delicious options as well!

Oven Toasted Bread
I don’t have a toaster in my studio kitchen in the basement, so this quick how-to came about from sheer laziness. The thought of hauling my toaster downstairs, crumbs flying everywhere because my children don’t clean the crumb tray, then having to vacuum up those crumbs, getting madder and madder as I walked down the stairs, crumbs flying from hauling my 4-slice toaster…well, you can picture it.
SO. I made toast in the oven rather than the crumb-spewing scenario I wrote above. And it works like a CHARM, and I will be using the broiler method next time I need to make my entire family hot toast all at the same time.

How to Toast Bread in the Oven – No Broiler
This is a slower method, useful for when you are say, frying eggs at the same time and need a bit of leeway.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F and get out a rimmed baking sheet large enough to hold all the pieces of bread you want to toast. Do NOT butter or grease it.
- Place your chosen slices of bread on the baking sheet in one layer.
- Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake the toast for 4-6 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy. Timing will depend on your oven.
- Flip the slices over, then return to the oven for another 4-5 minutes until the top side has browned and you have two browned sides on the toast.
- Remove, butter if desired, and serve.

How to Toast Bread in the Oven Using the Broiler
Use this method when you can stand and watch the toast for 2-3 minutes! You MUST watch it! I prefer this method as I just get it done quickly.
- Place your oven rack in the second from the top position in your oven.
- Turn on the broiler and get out a rimmed baking sheet large enough to hold all the pieces of bread you want to toast. Do NOT butter or grease it.
- Place your chosen slices of bread on the baking sheet in one layer.
- Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake the toast for 1- 1/2 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy. Timing will depend on your oven and watch the toast!
- Flip the slices over, then return to the oven for another minute or so, until the top side has browned, and you have two browned sides on the toast.
- Remove, butter if desired, and serve.
Toppings for Oven Toast
Once you’ve made your toast, you can try some homemade toppings on it:
- garlic butter – this is an easy way to make garlic bread
- strawberry freezer jam
- Saskatoon jam
- Heck, chop up some pickled eggs for those of you who like savory on toast!
And there you have it! Short and simple, but hey, it’s a great trick to know!
Love,
Karlynn

Works like a charm! I found some extra success rotating the baking sheets partway through, so the toast in the front gets equally dark.
-
I suggest you try buttering the bread and then baking in the oven. It takes on a different flavor and is so crunchy like giant croutons.

Works Great !!! Thank you so much!!! With Love , stuart

I was making turkey club sandwiches tonight for three people, so that requires 9 pieces of toast, I only have a small toaster oven that only holds two pieces of bread at a time and the toaster oven doesn’t heat up properly after the first batch of toast so it takes FOREVER!!! Also my oven is ancient and the broiler doesn’t work at all, so this was perfect!!! I was seriously considering buying a 4 slice toaster to speed up the process but I currently can’t afford to do that. I’m 61 years old and am embarrassed I had to google how to make toast in the oven. Thanks so much for the toast recipe!!!
