  • Green paint

  • Black paint

  • Paper plate

  • Artist's paintbrush

  • Stir stick

  • Measuring spoons

Mixing colors to create a darker hue is done by adding black. Lighter colors are created by adding white to the main color hue. It is important when mixing dark colors, such as dark green, to add small amounts of black paint to the main color and gradually attain the desired hue. Making a color lighter is opposite. Instead of adding white to the desired color, the desired color is added to white.

Mixing Small Amounts

Step 1

Squeeze a quarter size drop of green paint on a paper plate. Squeeze a pea size drop of black paint on the paper plate approximately 1 inch from the green paint.

Dip the end of the artist's paintbrush in the black paint. Insert the end of the brush in the green paint.

Mix the black and green paint together on the paper plate, using the paintbrush. Add more black paint and mix until the desired shade of dark green is attained.

Mixing Large Amounts

Step 1

Open a large can of green paint. Stir the contents of the can to mix any settled green paint.

Add approximately 1 tbsp. of black paint to the large can of green paint.

Step 3

Stir the contents completely until well mixed. Add more black paint 1 tsp. at a time to the green paint until the desired dark green shade is achieved. Stir the contents well after each additional teaspoon of black paint is added to the large can.
