Before using a Fire TV Stick device, you must pair the bundled remote. The process varies depending on your model, and not every remote is interchangeable with every generation of Fire TV. Here’s how to pair or reset your Fire TV Stick remote.

How to pair your Fire TV Stick remote

Thankfully, pairing your Fire TV Stick remote is relatively seamless.

1. Ensure the power and HDMI cables are securely plugged in for both the TV and Fire TV Stick device.
2. Turn everything on and switch the TV’s input to the Fire TV Stick. The Fire TV Stick UI should prompt you to pair the remote.
3. Ensure the remote has the batteries inside and they are in working order.
4. Make sure the remote is within 10 feet (or three meters) from the Fire TV Stick.
5. Press and hold the Home button for 10 seconds.
6. The light in the remote should start blinking.
7. Soon after, the screen should confirm the connection.

If you don’t see the blinking light or screen confirmation, try removing or replacing the remote batteries and waiting 30 seconds before trying again. If that still doesn’t work, refer to the next section for instructions on resetting your Fire TV Stick remote.

How to reset your Fire TV Stick or Alexa Voice remote

Resetting your Amazon Fire TV Stick remote is just as easy.

1. Unplug your Fire TV device and wait for about a minute.
2. Press and hold Left + Menu + Back. Don’t let go.
3. After 12 seconds, release all buttons and wait for about five seconds.
4. Remove the batteries from the remote.
5. Wait about a minute.
6. Plug your Fire TV device back in.
7. Put the batteries back into the remote and press the Home button.
8. The LED light on the remote will blink blue to indicate a successful pairing.

Note that you won’t see any blinking lights if you use an Alexa Voice Remote Lite (the one without any power or volume-up/down buttons).

How to reset your Alexa Voice remote 1st gen

Resetting the first-generation Alexa Voice Remotes is similar to the process above, except that you need to hold fewer buttons.

1. Unplug your Fire TV and wait for 1 minute.
2. Press and hold the Left button and Menu button at the same time. Hold them for 12 seconds.
3. Release the buttons and wait 5 seconds.
4. Remove the batteries from your remote.
5. Plug your Fire TV back in and wait 1 minute.
6. Put the batteries back in your remote.
7. Press the Home button.

How to reset your Fire TV Basic Edition

As for the Fire TV Basic Edition, the process is significantly different.

1. Press and hold the Home button. At the same time, press the Menu button three times.
2. Release the Home button and press the Menu button nine times.
3. Remove the batteries from your remote, unplug your Fire TV, and wait for one minute.
4. Once that time has passed, put the batteries back in the remote and plug your Fire TV in again.
5. Press and hold the Home button for 40 seconds once the Home screen appears. The setup process should then take a minute.
