In this tutorial, I will show you how to perform perfect removal of objects with Content-Aware Fill in Photoshop. This is a really easy-to-learn method and will save you a ton of time. Have a try!

In the past, to remove object and leave the background intact, we have to use a combination of selection tool and perhaps the clone stamp tool. With the arrival the content-aware fill, the process becomes much easier.

Step 1

Download this stock image from stockvault and load it into Photoshop. For this tutorial, the aim is to remove the 5x rusted metal pillars from the image.

If we look close to the image, we can see it will be very time-consuming to remove the pillar using traditional method such as clone stamp. This is when content-aware fill comes in handy.

Step 2

We start by using the Lasso Tool:

Draw a selection around the pillars:

Go to Edit > Fill (or Shift + F5):

In the “Contents” dropdown box, select “Content-Aware”, tick the “Color Adaptation” box:

Repeat the same process, fill the pillars on the right side:

You will have the following result:

You may notice after the removal of the pillars, the pixels around where the pillars were become slightly blurred. To fix this, we can simply use the sharpen tool and sharpen the area:
