Mario Party Superstars features various online modes allowing you to play the classic Mario Party mode with friends or with others with online matchmaking, or compete against others online in a variety of challenges. This guide covers how to play online multiplayer in Mario Party Superstars, how it works, and every online mode.

Mario Party Superstars Online Quick F.A.Q

  • When playing with random players, only one player on each Nintendo Switch will be able to play.
  • When playing with friends, up to three people on the same Nintendo Switch can play.
  • If a player is disconnected during an online game, they will be replaced with a computer - however, they have the opportunity to reconnect and rejoin the game.
  • Two modes in Mt. Minigames - Daily Challenge and Survival - can only be played when connected to the internet.
  • You need a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to play online.
  • The better your internet connection, the better the online experience will be. We suggest hard lining the Nintendo Switch.

How to Play Mario Party Superstars Online

Mario Party Superstars features local, online, and hybrid play. Up to four players can play together at a time.

As soon as you start Mario Party Superstars, it presents three options:

  • Offline Play - play locally on the same Switch. This mode automatically detects connected controls and asks for players to join when starting a Mario Party or embarking to Mt. Minigames. Each player can log into their own Nintendo account and track progress.
  • Local Play - play locally on different Nintendo Switches. This requires multiple copies of Mario Party Superstars.
  • Online Play - play online with friends or randoms.

Choose Online Play - you will be presented with two options.Online5.png

  • Global Game - With this option, only one player on the Nintendo Switch will be able to play with random players online.
  • Friend Game - With this option, a total of three players on the same console can play with others online - primarily people on your friend list. You can also play with anyone you give a code to.

How Global Game Works

In a Global Game, Mario Party Superstars will start as usual after choosing that option. You can start a Mario Party to be matched with random players online, or head to Mt. Minigames to play any of its modes (except Free Play) with players around the world.

For Mario Party, you are able to specify which boards you'd like to play on and what rules you'd like. Mario Party Superstars will then attempt to match you with other random players who chose similarly.

At Mt. Minigames, there are two modes that can only be played online:

  • Survival - Challenge other players online and maintain a minigame winning streak.
  • Daily Challenge - Challenge other players online in a series of themed minigames and earn Stars.

Free Play cannot be played with others in Global Game mode, but for all other Mt. Minigames modes, you will be paired with other online players randomly to compete. This includes:

  • Tag Match (2 vs. 2)
  • Trio Challenge (1 vs. 3)
  • Coin Battle (Earn the most coins)
  • Sports and Puzzles (Play sports or puzzle minigames in Score Attack

How Friend Game Works

If you choose Friend Game, you will immediately be redirected to Toadette once you get past the start screen to choose the following:

  • Create Room - Choose this if you would like to "host" the game.
  • Join Room - Choose this if someone has invited you to play.

When creating a room, choose Friends Only if you only want friends on your Nintendo Switch friend list to be able to join. Set a code to restrict those who can join to those you send the passcode to. When playing with those not on your Friend List, you must set Open to All and then share the Room ID with them - if you don't set Open to All, people will not be able to find your room, even if they do have the Room ID.

Once your friends have joined, or you have joined your friends, Mario Party Superstars works the same way it would as if everyone were playing on the same console. The "host" takes control instead of player one and chooses the modes you all will play.
