Whether they are scrambled, poached or fried, eggs can be delightful in a number of ways.

But when we decide to boil them, they can sometimes give off an unpleasant smell that works its way through your home.

Thankfully, a group of Australian parents have shared a simple way to prevent the odour that occurs when boiling eggs.

Posting in a popular Facebook group, one mum wrote that she neutralised the eggy smell by adding a few teaspoons of white distilled vinegar to the saucepan.

Other parents were quick to confirm that they had tried the trick and it had also worked for them.

Culinary scientist Jessica Gavin explains this in a little more detail on her website. She says that when eggs are cooked they release chemicals that form an unpleasant gas.

This is because the yolk releases iron while the egg whites release sulfur and hydrogen, which causes that familiar smell when it’s all mixed together.

But if you add white distilled vinegar to the water when the eggs are boiling, this will help prevent the chemical reaction from occurring. And the good news is that it doesn’t impact the taste either.

This helpful hack also stops eggs smelling once they are cooked, like if they are added to a child’s lunchbox – something some of the parents in the group were concerned about.
