Why Should You Brush Your Tongue Daily?
When we talk about brushing and flossing, we often focus on the teeth and gums. But the key to oral health is being thorough. Your tongue is a large part of your mouth and can be the source of many different oral issues. Bacteria growing on your tongue can lead to bad breath, infections, tooth decay, and gum disease if it isn’t effectively cleaned. In this article we will cover a few different ways you can brush your tongue.
Of course, one of the best ways to tackle oral health is to talk to your dentist. At your regular check-up you can get both a thorough cleaning, as well as get advice and guidance on how to improve your oral health habits. If you live in and around North Andover Massachusetts and are looking for exceptional dental care, contact Dr. Emma Wu & Associates for our dental services.

Using a toothbrush to clean your tongue is one of the most common and convenient options. Some toothbrushes even come with tongue cleaners that are on the opposite side of the bristles. When cleaning your tongue with a toothbrush, you first put a small amount of toothpaste on the toothbrush and then start brushing from the back of your tongue to the front. You should use gentle pressure and move the toothbrush back and forth, similar to how you brush your teeth. Too much pressure can damage/scratch the surface of your tongue, similar to how you can hurt your gums when you brush too hard. When you finish brushing your tongue, make sure to rinse out your mouth with either a mouthwash or with warm water.
Should You Use A Tongue Scraper Instead Of A Toothbrush?
A tongue scraper is another popular method of cleaning the tongue. All you have to do is place the scraper on the back of your tongue and use a continuously motion pulling forward to remove bacteria from the surface of the tongue. For the best results, move the scraper tool across your tongue from multiple angles to ensure you reach all of the bacteria. Remember to rinse your mouth out after with water or mouthwash! A scraper is an easy and quick way to clean your tongue!
After cleaning your tongue with either a scraper or toothbrush, check your tongue in a mirror. If it is pink and fresh looking, that means you cleaned it properly. However, if you notice a white or yellowish discoloration, clean it a few more times!
What Are The Benefits Of Brushing/Cleaning Your Tongue
Prevent Bad Breath
Bacteria on the tongue is one of the leading causes of bad breath. Cleaning your tongue especially after eating can remove bacteria that causes unpleasant odors.
Prevent Tooth Decay
Tooth decay and infections are caused when bacteria and plaque sits in our mouths. Cleaning your teeth, gums, and tongue, reduces the risk of tooth decay.
Better Taste
Bacteria that covers your tongue can also lead to food tasting less flavorful or having the wrong taste. Removing bacteria can make sure that meals taste the way they should.
How Often Do I Need To Brush My Tongue?
To ensure that you keep bacteria and plaque away, it is best to clean your tongue twice a day. A good rule of thumb is to brush or scrape your tongue right after you brush your teeth. Doing it before bed will help reduce the amount of bacteria able to grow, which reduces the chance of morning breath in the morning.
