How to put in your contact lenses

Whether you’re new to wearing contact lenses or you’ve been using them for a while, it never hurts to have a refresh on how to put them into your eyes. By following our helpful guide from our opticians, you’ll be able to easily, safely and comfortably insert your contact lenses into your eyes.

Before putting your contact lenses in

  • Before you put your contact lenses in you should wash your hands with soap and dry them thoroughly with a fluff-free towel before handling your contact lenses.
  • When applying your soft contact lenses, you should also check they’re not inside out. When you have removed the lens from the pack or case, the lens should form a bowl with the edges turned up. If the lens is inside out, the outer edge appears turned out.

How to put in daily & reusable soft contact lenses

  • Starting with the right eye, place the contact lens onto your right index finger. Check it’s not inside out, it should appear bowl shaped with the edges facing upwards. You shouldn’t see any tears or scratches. Dry your fingers to help you get a better grip on your eyelids.
  • Lower your chin slightly so you are looking up into the mirror. Use your right middle finger to pull down your lower lid, keeping your finger as close to the eyelash line as possible for a better grip.
  • Use the index finger of your left hand to lift the upper lid, again place your finger as close to your eyelashes as possible.
  • Keep both eyes open and look straight ahead into the mirror. Slowly bring your finger with the lens towards the white part of the eye, once in place slide across to cover the pupil. Make sure you maintain a secure grip of your eyelids throughout.

How to put in gas permeable contact lenses

  • Starting with the right eye, place the contact lens onto your right index finger.
  • Using your left index finger lift your upper eyelid. Hold close and centrally to the lash line to prevent blinking.
  • Place the middle finger of your right hand close to your lower eyelashes and pull down your lower lid. Again, place your finger as close to your eyelashes as possible.
  • Keep both eyes open and look straight ahead into the mirror. Apply the lens directly over the pupil.
  • When the lens is in place, look straight ahead, slowly let go of your lower eyelid followed by your upper eyelid. Blink to make sure the lens is in place. If you find it is not sitting correctly remove and re-apply.
