How to Regrow your Green Onions // Fun Kitchen Experiment!6/30/2015 15 Comments My Video: How to Regrow Green Onions I've been wanting regrow my green onions/scallions for a while now. The first time I tried to do this, my Grandparents were over and my Grandmother thought she would be helpful and clean up the kitchen. She ended up throwing away my poor stem that I had been taking care of for a few days. (sigh)Now I'm off to try this again. I started by saving the bottom stalks of the scallions (the white portions) then putting them in a glass, root down with a few tablespoons of water. Within 2 days I could see new growth in the green stems. (yay!) By day 5 it looked like they were growing strong. Now by day 6, I could literally see the changes overnight. To take care of them, I simply put the container on my window sill. Don't add more than an inch of water because I've noticed the water can get murky quickly. To help with this, I'm recommending changing out the water daily, or every other day and also giving the roots a rinse under cool water. This helps remove any sliminess that can inhibit the roots' ability to 'drink' water. If you live in an area with warmer/dry weather, you'll also notice that the water can evaporate quickly too.I'll post more photos when my little green onion plant grows a bit bigger. I'm very curious to try and use some of the green onions to see how they taste compared to regular ones. If you've tried this kitchen experiment before, how was your experience? Some of the tallest stalks have started bending (likely because they've gotten too tall and heavy). I ended up trimming and using the green onions for a soup and they made a nice tasty garnish. One thing to note is the new green stalks that re-grew seemed to be thinner/softer than when I originally bought them from the grocery store. I assume this is due to lack of nutrients, but they still made for a nice garnish. UPDATED PHOTOS (July 27, 2015):After 2 weeks of just watering daily, my green onions have grown over a foot tall! Do you have any pics of how they look now? Reply Angel Wong 7/27/2015 08:09:51 amHi Franny, Thanks for the reminder! I just posted new pics of how the green onions look 2 weeks later. Reply Zuly 4/5/2020 09:05:32 amDo you leave out or store in refrigerator?? Also can you put a ziplock over it for the smell not to travel VL 8/14/2015 12:53:04 pmHey do you have an update for how your green onions are doing now? I am thinking about trying this at home? Did you end up adding any nutrients to them or just throwing them out? Reply Angel Wong 8/15/2015 04:09:00 pmI unfortunately threw them out after a little over 2 weeks. Since I was traveling, I wasn't able to water them. :( In any case, the new stems seemed to be thinner so I wasn't sure they were going to last another round of growth and trimming. Next time, I would probably try adding a pinch of sugar to the water to see if it helps with the nutrients. Good luck! Reply tokies 10/15/2015 09:44:03 pmtry adding a little dirt Reply thao.ng 11/8/2015 06:14:05 pmHey! In my country they have a way to provide nutrition to these types of delicate plants which you grow in water or on moist sponge. You should take a Vitamin B1 (or a composition of Vitamin B-1,6,12,etc) pill, crush it and dissolve it into the water and water your plants with it. In this case of spring onions, may be you should dissolve the pill into the water you plant your onions first before putting them in. But you should do this only occasionally. Tell me later if it works for you :) Reply chy 9/19/2018 07:30:37 amdo you have day one photo Reply BRENDA E KENNEDY link 6/26/2019 09:31:17 pmI absolutely love green onions & add them to mayonnaise & make my own green onion mayo & sour cream. I enjoy them down to the roots. I have found that they not only regrow (thin & not really as much kick, but they seem to be "happiest" not in the refrigerator, but in a nice sunny window 😙 They also make my kitchen smell good & yes, very pretty to look at, as well. Reply Joy 7/6/2020 07:17:49 amMy question is when i need green onions to cook with do I cut the whole sprouts of green onion down to the white stalk so I can regrow them? or is it ok to cut what I need off the growing stalk Reply Bobby link 12/29/2020 05:35:23 amGreat ppost Reply Tez link 2/2/2021 04:15:06 pmI wasn't aware that you could grow onions in cups.
