Sooner or later it happens that a home faucet reaches the end of its cycle and you find a broken faucet in your hands! Basically, the taps that are installed in homes can be of three types:

screw with gasket

ball

cartridge (single lever)

The first type (screw) is irrecoverable when, despite the replacement of the gasket or the milling of the seat, it is no longer possible to shut off the water flow or when the screw becomes thick. In the second type (ball) it happens instead that the control lever is no longer able to rotate or, by rotating it, always draws water. The single-lever type is to be eliminated when, even changing the ceramic cartridge, it is not possible to mix the water or to control its flow. In all these cases it is necessary to remove the tap in order to subsequently replace it. The tap removal technique varies according to the type of dispenser and installation (eg on the sink, on a sanitary, on an external fountain) and the disassembly procedure is different. Let’s see the three classic cases.

Things you will need

  • Parrot key

  • Spanner

  • WD-40 Specialist® Penetrant

  • Scovolo

  • Open end wrench

Step 1

REMOVE AN EXTERNAL TAP

In general, the taps outside the house are ball or screw. Mixing is not provided because they only deliver cold water. In general, these taps are screwed onto a threaded sleeve which is inserted into a structure (external wall, column, etc.) flush with the surface. Generally the threaded connection is hidden by a circular mask that completes the tap. Disassembly, in this type of tap, is simple. After having closed the water supply to the main valve of the house, you must grab the body of the dispenser close enough to the threaded connection, with a parrot wrench and turn it anticlockwise. If a strong resistance is found, it is advisable to make an application on the thread of WD-40 Specialist Penetrant that penetrates quickly and loosens resistance with remarkable effectiveness. It is also water resistant. When the faucet has been screwed on, it is advisable to clean the thread of the wall sleeve with a brush or a brush and, if you do not proceed immediately to the assembly of a new faucet, it is advisable to screw in a threaded cap of suitable diameter.

Step 2

DISASSEMBLE THE BROKEN FAUCET OF A KITCHEN SINK OR BATHROOM UNIT INSTALLED ON THE WALL

The dispensers for sink or bathtub installed on the wall are connected to two threaded sleeves (for hot water and cold water) that protrude from the wall, through two threaded rings with hexagonal nut. The disassembly of the broken tap is carried out by grasping the rings with a fork or roller key acting counterclockwise. Once the unscrewing is completed, the tap can be removed. Also in this case we intervene with WD-40 Specialist Super Unlocking if there is a resistance to unscrewing. On the wall sleeves remain screwed the two S-shaped fittings that serve to adjust the distance of the connections (which are fixed as walled) that of the tap connections. These adapters can be left in place or removed to be replaced by new ones. In any case, they must be subsequently rotated to adapt to the distance of the connections of the new mixer tap.

Step 3

DISASSEMBLE THE FAUCET OF A KITCHEN SINK MOUNTED ON THE SINK

If the mixer tap to be replaced is mounted on the kitchen sink, this must be done in a different way. The tap, in the lower part, has a large threaded connection from which two pipes (generally flexible) depart which connect with the hot and fedda water supply to the wall. The threaded body is inserted on the sink and blocked, from below, with a large nut. The disassembly operation begins with the disconnection of the two flexible hoses from the hot and cold water supply present on the walls under the sink. It is a matter of unscrewing the two ring nuts screwed onto the inlets (always remember to “close” in advance the flow of hot and cold water). At this point you can unscrew the large nut that blocks the threaded connection of the tap. It is a question of acting under the sink to carry out this unscrewing. The job can be difficult due to the space and position of the nut. When this has been removed, the tap can finally be extracted from above, making both its threaded base and the two flexible pipes connected to the water supply come out of the hole in the sink. In case of disassembly difficulties, use the product mentioned above.

Step 4

DISASSEMBLE THE BROKEN FAUCET OF THE BATHROOM SINK

The mixer tap inserted on a sink can be disassembled like the one in the kitchen. The threaded part inserted in the sink is not usually tightened with a nut, but there is a metal plate (usually half-moon) mounted with two screws and an interposed gasket. Also in this case it is useful to unlock the screws with WD-40 Specialist Super Unlocking before disassembly. In addition, in the sink there is the lifting system of the pop-up consisting of some movable rods connected to each other with joints. These rods must be disconnected before the mixer can be removed from above.
