PEX (crosslinked polyethylene) plumbing systems have been gaining in popularity in recent years for both their ease of installation and multiple uses. Unlike rigid pipes commonly used, such as copper, PEX tubing is flexible and can be bent at all sorts of angles during installation. In addition, the PEX material is very resistant to scale and other buildup. PEX tubing is connected to couplings by means of PEX cinch clamps applied with special tools. In order to remove a PEX cinch clamp, another specialized tool is needed.

Step 1

Shut off the water supply running to the PEX cinch clamp that you want to remove. Many PEX systems use a manifold fitting for the water supply connection. These can be turned off by rotating the proper water supply valve.

Step 3

Slide the PEX clamp cutter around the clamp you wish to cut. The edges of the cutter should be positioned just underneath the clamp.

Step 4

Gently squeeze the handles of the cutter together until you hear an audible click as the clamp is cut.

Step 5

Pull the clamp off with pliers if it does not drop off on its own.

Tip

There are a number of different PEX clamp cutters available for purchase, both online and in your hardware or plumbing store. Shop around for the best deals.

Warning

Wear safety gloves when working around PEX clamps, as the edges can be sharp when cut.
