You may have heard blueberries referred to as a ‘superfruit’ – they might be small, but they’re absolutely packed full of all sorts of good vitamins that can help us to lead a happy, healthy lifestyle. Blueberries are excellent additions to kids’ diets (especially when made ‘fun’ by blending them into purple-coloured smoothies), and, when chopped into smaller pieces, they’re also great finger foods for weaning babies. Is there anything this superfruit isn’t good at? Sadly, yes – keeping you clean.

Blueberries have a very deep blue, almost purple colour (which makes them very attractive to kids who love the colourful nature of sweets), and this colour can cause big issues if you accidentally get some berry juice onto your clothing. However, it’s not just the colour of the berries that’s the problem, it’s also the sugar content. Blueberries are really healthy, but they do contain a high level of natural sugar. This sugar, when left on clothing, can eventually start to turn yellow, staining your clothes even more. So what’s the trick for removing blueberry stains from clothing?

If you have blueberry stains you want to get rid of, then Persil is an excellent choice. This detergent can claim full stain removal for blueberry stains – just pre-treat the stain first with the liquid detergent, and then wash as usual according to the directions on the product and clothing label.

Getting Started

Before you tackle these steps on how to remove blueberry stains from clothes, there are a few important points to learn and understand. These useful pieces of advice ensure your clothes are treated safely and effectively:

  • Always try to treat blueberry stains as soon as possible, before the sugar has had time to discolour the fabric, and before the juices have had a chance to dry into the fibres.

  • Although we’re often taught that hot water is best for removing stains, that’s not always the case. For blueberry stains, cool water is best.

  • Not all fruits are the same, so you may need a different cleaning method. Read our articles on and how to remove fruit or berry stains for more help.

How to Get Rid of Blueberry Stains on Clothes

Treating blueberry stains is easy when you know how!

  • First, read the care label on your garment for advice.

  • Then, flush the stain with cool water – the sooner you can do this, the better.

  • Then, pre-treat the stain with a stain remover or liquid laundry detergent like Persil small & mighty bio. Just follow the directions on the label. Pre-treating fabrics is easy – apply the detergent directly to the stain and allow to sit for a few minutes

  • Then, wash as normal with Persil detergent.

Remember to always check your clothing after washing to make sure that the stain has been completely removed. If the stain has gone, it is safe to dry the clothing as you would normally. If the stain remains, repeat the stain removal process whilst still wet, as drying the still-stained fabric on a high heat could make the smudge stay permanently.
