Mod Podge is a decoupage glue that is used to adhere fabric and paper to other objects. Mod Podge can be used to glue items, seal surfaces or to create a matte or shiny finish. There are several variations of Mod Podge designed for specific projects, such as outdoor items or fabrics. Some formulations of Mod Podge have glitter, shimmer or glow-in-the-dark properties. Mod Podge is a strong adhesive, so it can be difficult to remove after it has dried. Clean up excess Mod Podge while it is wet for best results.

Step 1

Wash your hands with soap and water to remove Mod Podge on your hands. Scrubbing your skin with soap and water will remove the adhesive from your skin. Mod Podge is easier to remove while it is still wet.

Dampen a cloth and wipe away excess Mod Podge from project surfaces while it is still wet. Water will remove wet Mod Podge easily, so try to remove unnecessary adhesive before it cures.

Rinse wet Mod Podge from fabrics. Water and detergent will remove Mod Podge from fabrics before the decoupage glue has cured.

Scrape away excess dried Mod Podge from small areas using a scalpel or knife. Scraping will remove small amounts of dried Mod Podge that have built up, such as drips. Take care when scraping surfaces since a sharp object may damage the surface below the Mod Podge.

Sand the Mod Podge to remove it completely. Sanding works with small or large areas of dried Mod Podge. You can use sandpaper or an electric sander, depending on the surface area of the project and the amount of Mod Podge that is present on the surface. Sand until you reach the surface of the project. Sanding may damage the original surface.

Tip

Allowing Mod Podge to fully cure between subsequent layers of application will prevent streaking, lumps and milky coloring that might otherwise require sanding to remove.
