How to Repel Flies with Pine Sol
This method works because flies HATE the scent of Pine Sol. Pine Sol’s scent tends to linger, which I am sure you have noticed if you use it often.
Not only does the scent repel flies, but it will also clean any surface you use it on. It is basically a win win!
Personally I like the smell of Pine Sol, so this homemade fly repellant also makes the space smell good and feel clean!

Which scents do flies hate?
Flies have a strong sense of smell, and while they flock to food (and animal waste, yuck) they fly away from certain smells.
Flies tend to dislike the smell of Pine Sol, citronella, peppermint oil, and clove oil. You will find that many DIY bug spray recipes use these ingredients in some way.
You will notice that these are all strong and distinct scents that are repulsive for flies, but rather pleasant for people!
How to Make Fly Repellant
Supplies needed: – Pine Sol Cleaner (use the original variety) – water – spray bottle – permanent marker
A note about ingredients: I was able to find original recipe Pine Sol at my local Dollar Tree. Yep, I only had to spend a buck to get started!
While you are there, feel free to grab a spray bottle if you don’t have one as well as the permanent marker.
It is always important to mark any homemade repellents you make so everyone in the household knows what the item is.
You can also date the bottle so you remember when the homemade fly repellent was made. After you make a batch it can be used for several weeks.

How to Make Homemade Fly Spray
Directions: 1. In your spray bottle, mix 1 cup of Pine Sol with 1 cup of water. If you wish to make more, simply do a 50/50 mix of ingredients.
2. Shake to mix well. Be sure the cap is secure properly to avoid leaks.
3. Use your permanent marker to label the spray bottle. Whenever you make homemade cleaners you should clearly mark the bottle so everyone in the household knows what is inside.
Can you believe these three steps are all it takes to make this simple DIY Fly Repelling Spray?
How to Repel Houseflies
How to use your Pine Sol Fly Spray: Generously spray the mixture on surfaces and around areas that flies tend to congregate. This can be on counters, picnic tables, lawn chairs, sheds, decks, the list goes on.
You can also spray it on:
– outdoor kitchens
– swings and gliders
– kid’s climbing or play equipment
– loungers
– outdoor recreational items
You want to really focus on areas where food will be consumed. Flies tend to flock to these areas so the scent of the homemade fly repelling spray will certainly help send them in another direction.
I don’t wipe the mixture off, I just allow it to air dry. It usually doesn’t take very long on a warm summer day. It may take a little longer if it is humid out.
Since you do want to give this homemade fly spray some dry time, it is a good idea to spray areas about an hour prior to using the space. That way it has plenty of time to dry before you use the space.

A few helpful tips:
– only use on hard surfaces to avoid staining
– avoid contact with fabrics
– avoid contact with skin and eyes
– if you are worried about staining, test a small area of the surface before spraying
– reapply every few days or after a heavy rain or heavy wind
– keep out of the reach of pets and children
– always label your homemade cleaners
– use with caution around plants
This is one of the easiest, most effective ways to repel flies! Why not give it a try and see how well it works for you?
