Determine the Finish You Need

Door hinges come in the same popular finishes as modern door hardware: oil rubbed bronze, flat black, and satin nickel. Brass is back too — think brushed brass, satin brass, and champagne brass. Match your hinges to your knobs/levers for a cohesive look throughout the home.

Determine the Hinge Size

Most homes use two sizes:

• 4" hinges on exterior doors
• 3-1/2" hinges on interior doors

How to measure: Open the hinge and measure the full height of one leaf (top to bottom). On standard hinges, that height usually equals the leaf width.

Determine the Corner Radius

Hinge corners come in three common styles:

• Square Corner (no curve)
• 1/4" Radius
• 5/8" Radius

Not sure if it’s 1/4" or 5/8"? Use the simple coin test:

• Hold a dime to the corner — if the curve matches, it’s likely 1/4" radius.
• Hold a quarter to the corner — if it matches, it’s likely 5/8" radius.

How to Install Door Hinges (Without Removing the Door)

1. Remove screws from one hinge only.

   Start at the top or bottom hinge. Interior (3-1/2") hinges usually have 6 screws; exterior (4") have 8.

2. Install the new hinge and secure all screws.

   Keep the door closed while you swap to maintain alignment.

3. Repeat for hinge #2.
4. Repeat for hinge #3.

Note: Most U.S. homes built in the last 40 years use three hinges per door, which makes this a simple one-person job. Older homes with two hinges may need a helper to hold the door slab while you swap each hinge.

Extra Tips

• Hinge pins: You don’t need to remove the pin to replace a hinge.
• Hole spacing: New screw holes don’t have to match the old ones exactly; the leaves cover offsets.
• Sticking screws: Hand-start screws to avoid cross-threading; use a drill clutch to prevent stripping.
• Sagging door? Upgrade one screw per leaf to a longer (e.g., 2–3") screw into the stud for lift and strength.
