How To Replace Your Whirlpool's In-Grille Water Filter EDR5RXD1

How to Replace Your Whirlpool’s In-Grille Water Filter EDR5RXD1 ImageAppliance ExpressApril 16, 2018Refrigerator RepairWater filters need to be replaced regularly in order for the water to stay safe and clean-tasting, so incorporate it into your regular refrigerator maintenance procedures. For Whirlpool and Kenmore refrigerators with an in-grille water filter, order replacement part EDR5RXD1, to replace most NL series and 4396XXX water filters. Then follow these steps:
  1. Unplug the refrigerator and lay a towel in front of the cartridge. Most major appliance replacement and maintenance tasks should be performed with the power to the appliance removed. Sometimes this step is unnecessary, especially for water filter replacement jobs, but you should consider unplugging the refrigerator if the filter is in the bottom grille. The water line and filter will drip during replacement, and you don’t want to risk the mix of water and any active electrical components.
  2. Remove the filter. Turn the front handle counterclockwise to unlock the cartridge and then pull it free.
  3. Replace the filter. Remove the dust cap on the new filter. Then slide it into the housing until you feel it click into position and twist it clockwise to lock it in place.
  4. Mark the future replacement date. Most filters are only effective for 6 months, or approximately 300-500 gallons depending on the model. Mark down the date if this is your refrigerator, or change the indicator light. If you’re replacing the water filter for a customer, ask if they’d like a reminder in six months.
Adding your client to a reminder list is good for business, especially because you can incorporate other refrigerator maintenance tasks like cleaning the condenser coils behind the grille. It also gives you a way to communicate with your customers with their consent and retain their business. For more appliance repair tips and maintenance procedures, go to Appliance Express here.
