Do you need to reprogram your Genie wireless keypad but don't know the PIN? If your keypad was set up by a previous owner (or you just forgot the PIN), you can reset the Genie keypad back to its original factory settings, create a new PIN, and program it to work with your garage door opener. This step-by-step guide will teach you how to reset and reprogram your Genie keypad and connect it to your garage door opener.

Reprogram a Genie Universal Keypad: Quick Steps

  1. Press and hold the PROGRAM and UP/DOWN buttons.
  2. After 5 seconds, a tone will sound. Release the buttons.
  3. Enter a new 3-8 digit PIN and press UP/DOWN.
  4. Enter the garage door opener's brand ID (see chart).
  5. Press UP/DOWN.
  6. On the opener, press LEARN/PROGRAM for 2-3 seconds.
  7. On the keypad, press UP/DOWN once every 2 seconds until the opener activates.

    • Once you're finished, your wireless keypad will be reset to its factory settings and ready to reprogram.
    • The steps to reset a Genie keypad vary by model. If this method doesn't work for you, you may need to follow the steps to reset a WKP or GK model, or a Wireless Keypad-IC model.
  2. Step 2 Reprogram a keypad that does NOT have yellow LEARN buttons. 2 Reprogram a keypad that does NOT have yellow LEARN buttons. Check the color of your garage door opener's LEARN or PROGRAM button. If the LEARN or PROGRAM button on the garage door opener (not the keypad, but on the actual opener unit) is NOT yellow, use these steps to reprogram your wireless keypad to work with your opener:[2]
    • Enter a new personal PIN on the keypad (3 to 8 digits).
    • Press and release the UP/DOWN key.
    • Enter the ID of your garage door opener (see this chart.
    • Press and release the UP/DOWN key. The LED will begin to flash.
    • On the garage door opener, press and hold the LEARN/PROGRAM button for 2 seconds, then release.
    • Back on the keypad, press and release the UP/DOWN button once every 2 seconds until your garage opener activates. Don't press any other buttons until the opener stops running.
    • When the light comes back on the keypad, your garage door will be programmed.

  3. Step 3 Reprogram a keypad that HAS a yellow LEARN button. 3 Reprogram a keypad that HAS a yellow LEARN button. If you're using a Chamberlain, LiftMaster, or Craftsman garage door opener that has a yellow LEARN/PROGRAM button, use these steps to reprogram your keypad:[3]
    • Enter a new personal PIN on the keypad (3 to 8 digits).
    • Press and release the UP/DOWN key.
    • Press 4 on the keypad.
    • Press and release the UP/DOWN key. The LED will begin to flash.
    • Press and hold the UP/DOWN key for about 5 seconds.
    • Release the button when you hear a tone.
    • On the garage door opener, press and hold the LEARN/PROGRAM button for 2 to 3 seconds, then release.
    • On the keypad again, press and release the UP/DOWN key once. You will hear a click.
    • On the garage door opener, press and hold the LEARN/PROGRAM button for 2 to 3 seconds, then release.
    • Return to the keypad and press and release UP/DOWN once. You will hear another click.
    • Press UP/DOWN once more, and the garage door opener will begin to operate.
    • Wait until the keyboard light goes out to do anything else. Your Genie wireless keypad remote PIN is now reprogrammed.

  1. Step 1 Press and hold the PROGRAM and UP/DOWN keys at the same time. 1 Press and hold the PROGRAM and UP/DOWN keys at the same time. Continue holding for 5 seconds. You can release the buttons once you hear a tone. When you release the keys, the LED will flash and then turn off. This resets your Genie wireless keypad back to its default settings.[4]
    • The default code for your keypad is 3-5-7. You will use this code until your garage door is programmed, and then you can change it.
    • If your Genie wireless keypad is in a black case, it's likely one of these models.
  2. Step 2 Place your garage door opener into programming mode. 2 Place your garage door opener into programming mode. The process to enter programming mode will be a little different depending on your opener model:[5]
    • If your garage door opener was released between 1995 and 2011, just press the Learn Code button on the garage door opener once, and the red LED will flash.
    • On more recent models, your garage door opener will have up/down buttons and a Program button. To enter programming mode:
      • Press and hold the Program button until the LED turns blue, then release the button.
      • The LED will begin to flash purple. Once it does, your wireless keypad is ready to program.
  3. Step 3 When the keypad backlight is off, enter 3-5-7. 3 When the keypad backlight is off, enter 3-5-7. This is the temporary PIN.
  4. Step 4 Press the UP/DOWN button on the keypad 3 to 4 times. 4 Press the UP/DOWN button on the keypad 3 to 4 times. Press the buttons slowly until the door operates. Stop pressing the button once the door motor starts moving. The garage door is now reprogrammed to the keypad.

    • Open the cover all the way. The light will blink once and then turn off.
    • Enter 3, 5, and then 7 on the keypad.
    • Press the PROG button.
    • Enter a new PIN (up to 8 digits).
    • Press the PROG key again.
    • Close the cover completely.

    • Press the SEND button, and the light will stay on.
    • Press the SEND button a second time, and the light will turn off.
    • Press SEND again, and the motor will run.
    • Press SEND one final time, and the motor will stop.
