It's more of a marriage of power in a sense via Sigils (you take hers into your own being).No matter what Anri will die. Even if you kill the Pilgrim. It'll just be later when you find her hollow and deal the blow yourself or leave her to rot away. That is pretty much always how the Souls Games go. His / her best ending is arguable, though I'd say it's "marrying" him or her since that leads to the (again arguable) best game ending. he goes back to horace shrine (smoldering lake where he is first found) and there you have to fight him as he is hollow.
