Wondering how to save your game in Animal Crossing: New Horizons? Here’s everything you need to know to avoid losing important progress.

One of the first things you’ll likely notice when playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons is that there’s no options menu within the game. No menu means no manual save function. Oh no! But don’t worry: you can save your game in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and it autosaves frequently.

When you first start playing, make sure you’ve got twenty or so minutes spare because you’ll go through a few cut scenes and conversations with characters before you’re given space to free roam. The only way you can save is by quitting the game. Pressing the ‘-‘ button on your Switch will prompt the game to ask you “are you ready to call it a day?”. If you select yes, your game will save and quit.

It’s as simple as that. The next time you load up the game, you’ll find yourself in the same position, with the same items in your inventory, etc. Not everything will be quite the same though; since Animal Crossing: New Horizons occurs in realtime, the time of day may have changed, and you’ll likely have new fruit on your trees, weeds on the ground and new fossils to dig up.

Don’t worry about losing progress if your Switch loses charge or something happens. Animal Crossing: New Horizons autosaves regularly, so you should never lose more than a few minutes progress should you have any technical issues.

Becca knew that she would be addicted to video games for the rest of her life when she saw the first pixelated zombie shambling across her TV screen while playing Resident Evil 3. She particularly enjoys being scared, laughing until she cries, or just plain crying while experiencing games. When she isn't playing games she loves spoiling her cat Usagi and eating any kind of sushi she can find.
