Shipping a Desktop in 5 Steps!
While at first it may seem like a daunting task to undertake, we’ll teach you how to pack and ship computers in just five simple steps.
You’ll Need
- Scissors
- Shipping Tape
- Plastic Wrap
- Shipping Box
- Cushioning Supplies
- Original Packaging (if available)
Step #1 – Wrap the Tower and Monitor
One of the biggest concerns with shipping a computer is moisture. Tightly wrapping and sealing it is the best chance you have at keeping a computer dry. You should completely and individually wrap your desktop computer and monitor with plastic wrap and seal both up tightly with packing tape before you pack them into the shipping box. This way, even if the box becomes wet or damaged during the shipping process, you’ve provided as much protection as possible.
Step #2 – Pack Computer in a Box
If You Have the Original Box:
Ideally, you will have saved the original packaging and box your computer came in. If this is the case, your best bet is to use as much of the original packing materials as possible. Once your computer is completely wrapped in plastic and back in the original box, just follow these steps:
- Seal the box with packing tape.
- Wrap the entire box with bubble wrap at least 3 inches thick on each side of the box and secure it with tape.
- Line the bottom of your shipping box with either bubble wrap or packing peanuts for added protection.
- Place the wrapped computer box into the shipping box.
- If there is additional room at the top, use more filler so the computer doesn’t shift.
If You Do Not Have the Original Box:
Don’t worry if you didn’t save the original box. Shipping a computer is easy even without it. After you’ve wrapped the computer and monitor in plastic wrap, you should:
- Wrap all individual parts of the computer (monitor, keyboard, CPU) with bubble wrap about 3 inches thick all the way around.
- Make a firm seal with packing tape so the bubble wrap stays intact.
- Add a thick layer of packing peanuts or bubble wrap to the bottom of your shipping box.
- Nestle each component into your shipping box (ideally in one layer).
- Fill open spaces with added bubble wrap or other filler until the box is almost full, but leave space in the box for all the accessories.
Step #3 – Wrap and Pack Computer Accessories
Now you’re ready to pack your accessories. This is the easy part – just wrap each accessory, including the mouse and any cables or cords, in bubble wrap and tape them securely. Add them to your box.
Step #4 – Add Protective Filler or Cushioning
Once all the computer components are in your shipping box, simply fill any remaining space with more filler. You want the box to be packed relatively tightly with filler to ensure there isn’t too much room for your computer to shift during transit. But be careful not to pack the box so tightly that it creates pressure on the computer.
Step #5 – Seal and Label the Box
Seal on the top of your shipping box with packing tape. It’s a good idea to use two layers of tape across the seams to prevent the box from opening. Create a clearly legible shipping label and adhere it to the top of the box. Cover the label with clear packing tape so it doesn’t become damaged, wet or smeared along the way.
“Fragile” and “This Way Up” stickers are useful and can help protect the computer by alerting carriers to the contents inside.
Key Takeaways:
- How to ship a PC successfully starts with removing internal components like the graphics card, hard drive, and GPU to prevent damage during the shipment
- How to ship a computer requires selecting sturdy cardboard boxes or moving boxes large enough to accommodate 3 inches of protective packing material on all sides
- Wrap the computer and all components individually with plastic wrap first to create moisture protection, then add thick bubble wrap secured with packing tape
- How to ship a computer monitor requires separate packaging with anti-static foam or air pillows to protect the screen from impact and pressure during delivery
- Use an appropriately sized outer box from your moving boxes inventory that prevents the PC from shifting while leaving room for adequate cushioning
- Calculate shipping costs across FedEx, USPS, and other shipping companies to find the most cost-effective rates for your desktop computer shipment
- Consider shipping insurance when using any carrier—most shipping companies offer coverage options to protect expensive PCs during transit
- Disassemble removable parts and secure each pcs individually with bubble wrap before placing in cardboard boxes lined with packing peanuts
- Add “Fragile” and “This Way Up” labels to your boxes to alert carriers at the shipment stage to handle with extra care during delivery
- For valuable components like graphics cards and hard drives, use anti-static bags before wrapping to prevent electrical damage during the shipment process
