How to SlideBy Ricky FrechMiranda SanchezJim McQ+3 morePosted: Apr 27, 2021 5:11am UTC

Sliding is an important skill for any MLB The Show 21 player to learn. Often, it can be the difference between safely getting on base or being tagged out. Getting that extra few feet of distance really matters for close plays in the field.

Fortunately, the game mostly does a solid job of deciding when your player should slide for you. In fact, if you’d rather just not do any baserunning on your own, you can choose to make it fully automated.

To change baserunning to automated, from the main menu select Settings>Settings>Gameplay>Batting & Baserunning. Then, hit R2 (RT on Xbox) to switch to the Advanced tab. From there, you can switch baserunning to auto. This will let the CPU fully take over baserunning for you.

On this same menu, you can also select to let the CPU take over sliding. This lets you still control baserunning, but has the computer decide when to slide. By default, this setting is set to Assist. Switching it over to On gives the CPU full control, taking you completely out of the equation on sliding decisions.

That said, as you look to move up and even start to go after online competition, you should consider adding manual sliding to your repertoire. While the CPU mostly makes good decisions at lower difficulties, you might find yourself wanting more control as you move onto stiffer competition.

How to Manually Slide

Thankfully, manual sliding is easy to explain. As you’re coming into the bag, simply hold down L1 (LB on Xbox) and tilt the right stick either up or down. This will lock you into a slide and, hopefully, result in you being called safe.

Tilting the stick up causes you to do a headfirst slide. This dive generates that extra distance by diving into the bag. Fortunately, you don’t have to deal with the real-world issues of getting dirt in your face.

Meanwhile, tilting the stick down puts you into a feet first slide. For most situations, this is the standard slide as it both gives you some extra distance and makes you a smaller target for the fielder to tag. This is the slide we’d go with if you're not sure what to do.
