Many people have lost their car keys at one point or another. But, particularly with older cars, some of those people do not have spares that they can dig out and use until the other set reappears. In this situation, there are ways to start a car without the keys, which can help temporarily until you can get a locksmith out to make you a new set of keys or replace the ignition switch completely.

Step 1

Locate the screws that are holding the plastic trim in place on your steering column.

Step 2

Unscrew these screws and remove the plastic trim pieces by simply lifting them off. You have now exposed the ignition switch.

Step 3

Remove the bolts or screws that are mounting the ignition switch to the steering column. This will unlock the steering wheel.

Step 4

Remove the screws that are holding the electrical part (the part with the wires) and the mechanical part of the ignition switch together.

Step 5

Insert a flat-head screwdriver into the key hole and turn in the same direction as you would your key. This will start your car.
