There are many reasons why you could have a squeaky door hinge. Friction in the hinge can be caused by a build-up of rust, dust, and debris, as well as a lack of lubrication. But don’t worry, WD-40 is here to help! Continue reading this handy step-by-step guide below, to discover how to fix a squeaky door hinge with ease.
Things you will need
- WD-40® Multi-Use Smart Straw Multi Purpose Penetrant Spray
- Paper towels
- Cloth
Step 1
Prepare the squeaky door hinge area
Firstly, it’s important to make sure no dust and muck have built up on your door hinges. Take a clean cloth and give the hinges a wipe-down to ensure they’re dirt-free when it comes to applying the product. You may want to wet your cloth when wiping down the hinges, it’s entirely up to you. However, make sure to dry the hinge afterward with a kitchen towel.
Step 2
WD-40 to the rescue!
Next, take a paper towel and fold it in half. Place this underneath the hinge and hold it there. This will save any mess by catching any excess WD-40 product that may trickle down the door. Then, take your trusty can of WD-40 Multi-Use Product, and use the handy Smart Straw to spray directly on the hinge. Once you have done this, wipe the hinge down with another paper towel.
Step 3
Open and close the door
Now, to help the WD-40 product work it’s way into the hinge, open and close the door a few times. This will help the formula to reach into all the tiny areas of the hinge that you may have missed.
Step 4
Apply more WD-40
After this, repeat the same two steps of placing kitchen roll under the hinge and spraying on the WD-40 Product, but do so on the the other hinges this time. We want to ensure that your door is squeak-free in all areas – therefore, we recommend treating both the hinges. Again, give the hinge a wipe down to remove excess product once you’re done.
Step 5
Check for squeaks
Now, you can test your door. Open and close the door again to allow product to trickle into all the areas of the hinge. When doing this, you should now recognise your door is no longer squeaking!
Job Done!
Finally! That painful screeching sound from your door is a thing of the past. Now you know how simple it is to fix a squeaky door hinge, you won't have to worry about this the next time another door squeaks.
