Where to Find a Cat

Cats are a passive mob that can be found in certain locations in-game and it usually varies in the amount. A complete list of all the Biomes Cats can spawn in can be found below.

  • Village
  • Swamp Hut
To learn more about the different types of Biomes that are available to find across Minecraft, be sure to check out our Biomes guide for more details.

Food Needed to Tame a Cat

To tame a cat you’ll need either raw cod or raw salmon. Both of these fish are commonly found in just about every ocean biome. You can easily get these fishes by hunting them in the water, they usually die in just a few hits.

How to Tame a Cat

Now that you have the food you need, you’re going to need to sneak up on a cat. Cats are easily frightened so when approaching them it’s best to slowly creep up on them by crouching or standing still near them with the food. Once you tame the cat you’ll notice hearts will appear above their heads, and a red collar will spawn on their neck, just like the wolves.

But similarly to the wolves, you can also change the color of the collar by right-clicking or by pressing the left trigger while holding dye.

Get to Know Your Cat

A tamed cat will follow you around as well, but what makes them particularly useful is that they scare away creepers. So you can take them on trips with you, or you can have them standing guard around your home.

To heal a cat, all you need to do is feed it some raw cod, or raw salmon. You won’t be able to tell how much health it has like you could with a wolf. So you’ll just need to pay attention to how much damage your cat has taken.
