Typically found roaming in packs, Llamas are a neutral mob that make for the perfect companion when transporting goods for long-distance, due to the fact that you can put a chest on them. So whether you're looking to find a Llama, the steps needed to tame them, how to control them, or how to put a chest on them, we have you covered in our llama taming guide below, which has been updated following the Minecraft 1.18 update.

How to Tame a Llama

Unlike cats, parrots, and wolves you don’t need to feed a llama anything. To tame it is fairly simple, all you need to do is hop on its back. The first couple of times you do this it’ll knock you off. But give it enough time and you’ll have the llama tamed in no time. If you’re lucky enough, you’ll be able to tame it in one go. Once you’ve successfully tamed a llama, hearts will appear above its head. It’s also worth mentioning that you can heal a Llama with Wheat or with a Hay Bale. Minecraft Tamed Llama LG.png

How to Control a Llama

Unlike a donkey, horse, and mule you can’t control a llama with a saddle. You can still hop on their back but it won’t do you any good. The only way to control them is by using a lead. Once you have a lead on a llama it’ll follow you where you go, as long as you’re holding onto it.

How to Put a Chest on a Llama

Putting a chest on a llama is fairly simple. All you’ll need to do is approach the llama after taming it and right-click it or press the left trigger and you’ll put a chest on it. You’ll be able to access the inventory of the Llama by mounting it, and the chest won’t be available until after the Llama dies. Minecraft Llama Chest LG.png
