How to Get Bones

Bones are an essential item for taming a wolf in Minecraft, as these are the only form of item that wild wolves will eat. In order to obtain and farm bones quickly, wait until the sun goes down and you'll notice that Skeletons start to spawn -- typically, Skeletons spawn at night or in poorly lit areas.

Upon defeating a Skeleton, you'll receive anywhere between zero and two bones. While you won't need too many bones to tame a wolf, just make sure to grab a few spare just in case the wolf doesn't take to your bones the first time around.

Where to Find a Wolf

Wolves are most commonly found in packs of fours, and will usually spawn in Biomes such as the Forest and Wooded Hills. A complete list of all the Biomes Wolves can spawn in can be found below.

  • Forest
  • Wooded Hills
  • Taiga biome
  • Giant Tree Taiga
  • Snowy Taiga
To learn more about the different types of Biomes that are available to find across Minecraft, be sure to check out our Biomes guide for more details.

How to Tame a Wolf

Now that you have collected the bones required, approach a wolf with the bones in hand and, when close enough, feed them the bones. Once you've given the wolf enough bones, hearts will appear above its head, and you'll know it's tamed when a red collar will appear around the wolf's neck. Minecraft Tamed Wolf LG.png

If red isn't your color, simply change the color of the wolf's collar by right-clicking or by pressing the left trigger while holding dye.

Get to Know Your Wolf

A tamed wolf can be commanded to follow you and stay. If you command it to stay, as long as it's in a safe area, it won't die or despawn. However, should the wolf be following you, it'll attack any mobs that you attack, with the exception being creepers.

If your wolf has engaged in combat, you'll be able to judge the health of your wolf simply by how high its tail is. If your wolf has a low amount of health, it'll begin to whine and the lower its health is the lower its tail will be. You'll be able to heal your wolf by feeding it any raw meat, even rotten flesh.

Now that you've learned how to Tame a Wolf, why not check out our Breeding Guide that details everything you need to know about Breeding Wolves and other Mobs in Minecraft.
