They are “a thing” here in the South and are used regularly in many amazing recipes. So, when a sweet reader asked me to share how I toast pecans and how I use them, I was happy to oblige!
Why You Should Learn How To Toast Pecans
- It’s a simple process that yields BIG flavor!
- You can use them in savory or sweet dishes, so they’re great to have on hand.
- They will stay good for several weeks in the fridge, meaning you do the work once and can bask in the results for a long time.
Why Toasting Pecans Enhances Their Flavor
When pecans are toasted, the natural oils within the nut are released, deepening the flavor and giving them a richer, more intense nutty taste. The heat from toasting also adds a slight crunch, making them even more enjoyable in everything from salads to desserts. Plus, it’s an easy way to elevate any dish!
Ingredients For Toasting Pecans

- Butter – Unsalted or salted butter is fine. Olive oil can also be used. This helps the salt or other seasoning stick.
- Pecans – Of course, we need pecans. I slice them in half or buy ones already sliced in half. This keeps them flat on the tray for better roasting.
- Salt—A little salt helps balance the pecans’ natural sweetness as they are heated. You can also use your favorite spice blend, like Homemade House Seasoning, Cajun seasoning, or steak seasoning.
How To Toast Pecans Without Burning Them
There are two main methods for roasting pecans: oven-roasted or stovetop. Both methods are the best for toasting pecans (you can also use walnuts or almonds), but there are some differences.
Oven Roasting: Oven roasting allows for larger batch sizes, making it ideal for simultaneously roasting larger quantities of pecans.
Stovetop: Stovetop toasting is quicker and offers more control over the toasting process. It is well-suited for smaller batch sizes when you want to toast pecans for immediate use.
How To Toast Pecans

Oven Toasted Pecans
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil. Melt butter in a microwave-safe dish. Place pecans on the pan in a single layer and drizzle with melted butter. Roast in a 325-degree oven for 20 minutes, tossing halfway through cooking time. Remove pan from oven, sprinkle with salt, and let pecans cool.
Stovetop Toasted Pecans
- Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add pecans. Toss in butter and toast for 3-5 minutes until golden brown. Remove pan from heat, sprinkle with salt, and let pecans cool.
Donya’s Success Tips
- Buying pecans: When purchasing pecans, choose shelled pecans that are fresh, plump, and have a smooth texture. Avoid any pecans that appear shriveled or have a rancid smell.
- Cooling and storage: Allow the roasted pecans to cool completely on the baking sheet. Once cooled, transfer them to an airtight container and store them at room temperature to maintain their freshness and crunchiness. If stored properly, they can last for several weeks.

- Double or triple: It’s super easy to scale this recipe up to make extra for yourself or gifts for friends!
