The iPad is a portable multimedia device that makes sounds to alert you to various events. If you don’t want to hear these audible notifications, you can turn the iPad to silent mode by configuring a switch on the side of the iPad to mute sounds. Using the silent mode only cancels audio notifications; you can still hear audio when using an application to play music or videos.

Silence An iPad when the “Use Side Switch to” option is set to “Mute.”

Step 1

Press the “Home” button on your iPad to go to the home screen.

Step 2

Tap the “Settings” icon, and tap “General.”

Step 3

Tap the “Use Side Switch to” option to “Mute.”

Step 4

To silence all sound completely, hold down the Volume button.

Silence An iPad when the “Use Side Switch to” option is set to “Lock Rotation.”

Step 1

If you have set the Side Switch to toggle rotation lock and you still want to mute sounds, double-press the “Home” button.

Step 2

Flick a finger from left to right against the bottom of the display until you see the audio playback controls.

Step 3

Tap the “Mute” icon, which is marked with a speaker and sound waves. A slash appears across the Mute icon to indicate that you have used it to silence alerts.
