Originally designed as an add-on to existing TVs, the closed-captioning system helps hearing-impaired people enjoy television by providing a written version onscreen of what is being said. Closed captioning can also be valuable in teaching children how to read or making sure that you can follow your favorite shows while you have them muted. However, the technology also has a major drawback in that it obscures large portions of your screen with unattractive text. Luckily, it's easy to turn off.

Step 1

Press the "Menu" key on your remote control.

Step 2

Scroll down to the "System" option, and then press "Enter."

Step 3

Press the down arrow on your remote control's directional pad until "Caption" is highlighted, and then press "Enter."

Step 4

Select "Off," and then press "Enter." Press "Menu" to exit the menu system and get back to watching your TV.
