How To Turn Off Steam Friend Activity Notifications - Cultured Vultures

If you’re tired of Steam pop-ups letting you know what your friends are playing every two minutes, it’s time for you to turn off Steam friend notifications and have a few moments of peace. As good as Steam is, this is one feature that a lot of us can do without.

These friend activity notifications are supposed to let you know that a friend is online, or that they’re playing a game that you’re interested in. While this can lead to you chatting to or even joining them in that game, it’s a setting that’s on by default when it should really be a choice, meaning that you get bombarded with pop-ups. Luckily, there is a way of fixing this.

To turn off notifications for when your friend is playing a game on Steam, there are two main ways of doing it. One is to manage it per individual friend, and the other is to disable all Steam friend activity notifications at once. Here are the two different methods explained.

Disable All Steam Friend Activity Notifications

Here’s how you can disable all friend activity notifications on Steam at once.

Launch Steam. Go to Friends in the top left.

Then, select View Friends List (this may open automatically for you when you launch Steam).

From this pop-up, select the cog on the right to open settings.

From this menu, go to Notifications. Here, you can choose to turn off notifications for when a friend comes online or plays a game, including whether or not it should play a sound.

Back out of the menu and then you should no longer get activity notifications.

Disable Specific Steam Friend Activity Notifications

To disable activity notifications from a specific friend on Steam, the method is very similar.

Launch Steam. Go to Friends in the top left.

Then, select View Friends List (this may open automatically for you when you launch Steam).

Right click or select the downwards arrow on the friend you want to disable activity notifications for, then select Manage > Notifications.

Here, you can choose to turn off notifications for when this friend comes online or plays a game, including whether or not it should play a sound.

Finally, you can play ULTRAKILL in peace.
