Type Pipe in Windows

There are many ways to insert the pipe symbol in Windows computer.

Alt Code for Pipe or Vertical Line

It is easy to insert pipe symbol using alt code keyboard shortcuts.

Hold one of the alt keys in your keyboard and type 124 using number pad to insert pipe symbol |.
If you do not have number pad on your keyboard, type 007C and then type alt + x keys together. This will work only in Microsoft Word documents.

Using Character Map to Insert Pipe

Windows PC comes with a in-built app called Character Map. Press “Win + R” keys to open Run app, type charmap and click “OK” button to open the Character Map app.

On Character Map app, check “Advanced view” and select “Unicode” option for “Character set”. Enter the hexadecimal code value 007C in “Go to Unicode” text box and press enter key. It will show the vertical line symbol and double click on it to show in the “Characters to copy” text box. Now, click “Copy” button to copy the symbol to clipboard and paste anywhere you want.

With Symbols Utility in Office Apps
