For many men out there, the beard dream is for thick, evenly spread facial hair.  However, growing the perfect beard does not always come easy to some, which is why more and more men are turning to the beard roller , a clever gadget that can help avoid the dreaded thin & patchy beard.

What is a beard roller?

Beard rollers are a tool used to stimulate hair follicle growth through the technique of “micro-needling” leading to a denser and more even beard.

This practice aims to increase the supply of collagen beneath your skin by pricking the skin. By penetrating your skin at a certain level (the epidermis) the brain is tricked into thinking that area of skin is injured & thus floods the area with a supply of collagen to heal that injury.

With the increase in blood flow and collagen, the growth rate of your beard is boosted.

How to use a beard Roller?

Generally, as rule of thumb, we suggest that you roll in each direction 10 times.

Try not to put a lot of pressure when you roll over your skin to avoid sore irritation. Keep to a medium pressure so not too hard, but not too soft.

Roll 10 times crossways, left, right, and down on your neck area.

NOTE: When rolling, lift the roller instead of just twisting it to a new direction. Twisting will damage your skin and may lead to an infection.

After completing the needling process, your skin will look red due to the increase in blood flow to that specific area.  Give time for your skin to settle & things should return to normal in 5-10 minutes.

During the micro needling process, if you feel pain or discomfort, stop it immediately.

Does a beard roller work?

The simple answer is yes!

Clinical studies have proven that the consistent application of micro-needling techniques does work in promoting hair growth.   In fact a 2013 study published in the International Journal of Trichology concluded that:

“Microneedling is a safe and a promising tool in hair stimulation”

The study was conducted on a sample of 100 men, split in to 2 groups, with the group that used micro-needling showing significantly increased hair growth – 4 times that of the other group. (linkhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3746236/)

The beard roller also stimulates natural collagen production, keratin production& activates stem-cell growth factors, all of which are related to beard growth in one way or another.

 

 

How often should you use a beard roller?

We recommend using your beard roller two to three times per week, consistently for a few weeks.

This gives your skin a chance to rest and repair itself between use, while giving you plenty of opportunity to maximise beard growth potential.  

Of course, the size of the needles is a big factor in how often you can use the roller.

• Small 0.25mm needle size roller - then you can use the roller more than twice a week.
• Medium 0.5mm needle size roller - then follow the 2x per week rule.
• Large 0.75mm needle size roller - then roll no more than once per week.

In Summary

Using a beard roller is a cheap and easy method of stimulating beard growth yourself at home, without expensive trips to the male grooming parlour, or a skin specialist. It works by boosting circulation, keratin, and collagen production. While micro-needling can take a while to work, it is one of the most effective methods of boosting hair growth with consistent application.
