How To Use A Grease Gun | Alok Tools

A grease gun is quite easy to use when you know what you’re doing. However, if it’s your first time using it, then it may feel a tad bit intimidating. Worry not, here in this guide, we give you some top tips on how to get the most out of your grease gun.

How to use a grease gun?

The first step is figuring out the type of grease gun you’re using. Here, at Alok Tools, a leading supplier of industrial tools in India, we have two lever-type grease guns in our product category:

  • Heavy-duty grease gun
  • Super value grease gun

Here’s a look at the four major types of grease gun:

  1. Lever

It’s the most popular type of grease gun. As the name implies, to operate this gun, all you have to do is apply enough pressure on the lever. When you pull back the lever, it forces grease out of the nozzle.

  1. Cordless

As the name implies, this grease gun is battery powered and doesn’t have any cables. However, one major drawback of this grease gun is that you have to charge it before using it.

  1. Pistol-grip

This gun operates just like a lever-based grease gun. However, you need to grip the gun like you would hold a hand-held pistol. The biggest drawback of this model is that the pressure from the nozzle is not as high as a lever-based grease gun.

  1. Air-powered

It’s the most expensive of all types and is mostly used by large industries. The pumping action of the grease is dependent on air power.

How to use your Grease Gun?

In this guide, we’ll explain the how-tos of the operation for a lever-type gun. However, you can easily adapt this guide to suit any type of grease gun. Learning how to use a grease gun is quite simple when you know how to do it.

  • All grease guns use grease cartridges. The first step in using this tool is to ensure that you’re using a cartridge of the right size.
  • Remove the top of the head from the barrel. Make sure to pull up the lever up, so that you insert the grease cartridge.
  • Once the lever rod is withdrawn, you can lock the cartridge into place.
  • Make sure to remove the foil cover on top of the cartridge before you insert it. Very often, most people make this mistake as they assume that inserting the cartridge automatically removes the lid.
  • Make sure to insert the cartridge all the way in. It should be level with the rim of the grease gun.
  • When you place the right-sized cartridge it should fit flush inside the barrel.
  • Once you’ve placed the cartridge inside, don’t screw the barrel on tightly. This is because some volume of air will be left inside the cartridge. When there’s an air pocket inside the barrel, it makes it difficult to expel grease at the end of the gun. So, you need to expel all the air inside before screwing the barrel.
  • Make sure to press the cartridge rod towards the end of the barrel before you screw it back.
  • Check if grease flows out smoothly from the end of the nozzle. If yes, then you’ve completed the process successfully.

5 Handy Grease Gun Tips for Beginners

  1. Make sure to clean the fitting before grease it

Cleaning the bearing or fitting avoids wastage of grease, while also keeping the nozzle of your grease gun dust-free.

  1. Check the fitting before greasing

While this may seem obvious, it’s one of the most common oversights. Double-check the fitting before applying grease on it. This way, you can be sure that you’re not wasting grease on a fitting that is beyond usage.

  1. Clean the gun after every use

It’s the mark of a good tools man. Make sure to clean your grease gun, before storing it. The extra minutes you spend on keeping your tool in top shape will help you extend its life for years to come.

  1. Don’t over tighten the barrel

For proper operation of a grease gun, you need to tighten the barrel. But, avoid over-tightening it. As extensive pressure will make it impossible to use.

  1. Don’t mix different types of grease

Make sure that the barrel is completely empty before loading with another type of grease. This is because some greases do not blend well and you would be left with an unusable grease gun.
