This is one of the scariest sewing machine feet... except it really shouldn't be.
All the stitches are hidden away, so the pressures off for perfect lines of stitching and when you combine the foot with the invisible zip then really all the work has been done for you. So lets get started by looking the foot itself. From the top it looks a little like and old fashion iron. From the bottom there are two grooves which you will feed the zipper teeth through to line up the stitching perfectly. Once the foot is installed, using the bar attachment you can focus on lining up the zipper correctly with your fabric.
Lining up the Fabric
Unlike other feet we will be setting up on the right side of the fabric for an invisible zipper. Prepare the seam edges, serging or pinking, before you line up the zipper. Place the seams right side up and together, matching patterns where necessary. Mark the top position of the zipper on both pieces of fabric (pins will do), so the zip will align properly when you are finished. Mark the seam line (with pins, chalk or an erasable marker) using the relevant seam allowance for your project. This is where we will be sewing our zip.
Prep Your Zip
If the zip is overly curled, unzip and press along the fabric lightly so the teeth lay flat. Now to attach the zipper to the fabric. With the zip opened up and facing down on the right side of the fabric, pin in place lining the teeth on the seam line you marker earlier. If the fabric is slippery or thicker then you may need to baste, pinning should be sufficient for most projects though. To stitch the zipper position the zip teeth under the presser foot in the relevant groove and stitch until the presser foot reaches the zipper stop. Backstitch to lock in and remove. With the joining pieces of fabric side by side flip the piece with the zip sewn in over. This puts the other side of the zip in the correct position. Repeat the pinning, basting and sewing for the second half of the zip. Finally you close the remainder of the seam using a regular zipper foot to get the seam as close as possible to the end f the zip. Make sure to keep the tail end of the zip out of this final seam.
