Easy ThrillingYoung Sherlock 2026

Young Sherlock isn’t quite accurate to the Andrew Lane book series or the original works from Arthur Conan Doyle. Here, the detective in question is college aged, rather than 14 or 60, a choice made surely to introduce a new ensemble of fresh-faced talent. And unlike its source material, there’s a larger mystery behind each episode’s case. We would say that these changes make the story better fit for television– Holmes at his unpolished youth has more freedom to mess up, so it certainly allows the cast and crew to have much more fun. And while some decisions feel distinctly out of time, Young Sherlock would be enjoyable enough for this generation.

FunnyMan on the Run 2026

The Beatles is the greatest musical band ever created, or at least the one with the most success, most influence, and most impact in the industry. So, what do they do when that same band breaks up? Fans that have followed their careers since are likely to know what has happened, but the perspective Man on the Run presents is fascinating. Focusing entirely on Paul McCartney, this documentary clears up some of the mystery and confusion that surrounded him, the weight of the expectations and the disappointment of the fans over the break-up. Of course, the archive alone would already please fans. Filmmaker Morgan Neville simply takes that footage to celebrate McCartney’s reinvention.

Lovely RomanticBaran 2001

Baran is a romantic drama, though unlike the grand gestures and declarations of love that are common in the West, the romance here is more subtle. It’s the kind of romance that blooms secretly, without any way it could be expressed. Lateef and Baran don’t even share a proper conversation. That isn’t to say that their connection is a shallow one because what they have together reveals what truly keeps them apart– their poverty, their employment despite being children, the way their society insists on the separation by genders, and their residency status. All they can share are a peek of each other’s face and the few glances of someone they can’t fully know. Baran beautifully illustrates how love can bloom in spite of all of it.

Grown-up Comedy RawChild’s Pose 2013

With drastic consequences and the existence of the law, how do the rich get away with anything? Child’s Pose doesn’t fully answer the question, but it does present this error of justice through the awful, toxic co-dependency between a son and his overbearing mother. With a car crash serving as an example, the film follows Cornelia Keneres as she does all she can to keep her baby boy from jail. Luminița Gheorghiu excellently portrays Cornelia with the devotion she’s lavished onto her son, and with each new breach, each person she’s had to pay off, and each time she interferes, the film depicts how thankless her efforts actually are. Child’s Pose understands how pathetic these rich bastards are, and rightfully mocks them for it.

Dramatic RomanticLove Story 2026

Let’s get this out of the way: Love Story isn’t an accurate retelling of the marriage between John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bassette, just ask their living relatives about it. However, historical accuracy is not really the point. Much like the other franchises under American Story, Love Story feels more like a portrait of what America used to be– this time, through the closest thing the United States had to a royal marriage. Indulging in the 90s-00s nostalgia, this whirlwind romance takes on familiar themes of celebrity and public scrutiny with all the high-fashion glamor, a semblance of curated taste, and none of today’s social media clout chasing. It helps that Sarah Pidgeon and Paul Anthony Kelly look so good together, with their classic visages and old-school vibes. Love Story doesn’t present something new or true, but the show is nonetheless very watchable.

ThrillingSteal 2026

As financial systems update for the digital age, so do the related crimes. This crime thriller series starts out with a break-in, but after forcing office worker Zara Dunne to transfer the funds online, the robbery proves to be much more complex than a simple hit-and-run. It’s rather entertaining. The pressure put upon office workers Zara Dunne and Luke Selborn reflects the way technology has shifted risk, simultaneously presenting itself as more secure, yet can be tweaked with just a few clicks. Each new clue is presented quite masterfully, raising more questions and heightening the suspense. While some plot points might be predictable for fans of the genre, most of the twists work, thanks to the performances of Sophie Turner, Archie Madekwe, and Jacob Fortune-Lloyd.

FunnyZatoichi 2003

This remake brought back the iconic blind swordsman a decade after disappearing from film, and like his previous stints, it’s entertaining and action-packed. It’s cool to see bad guys taken unaware by Zatoichi’s unassuming demeanor. It’s exciting to see Takeshi Kitano take on the mantle from the late Shintaro Katsu, and fight for the oppressed town he’s visiting. This time, however, the 2003 remake takes on a lot more fun. Adding to the Western-esque drama and Japanese chanbara, the 2003 remake brings in more energy, more CGI experimentation, and more humor– emphasizing the mostly serious character’s more playful deceptions and lighthearted interactions with the people he’s protecting. Beat Takeshi only had this one stab at the franchise, but The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi is certainly fun, and certainly well-made.

Depressing IntenseA Woman in Berlin 2008

A Woman in Berlin is a harrowing film. Of course, many war dramas aren’t easy to watch, as they present the worst deeds humanity has ever done. However, this story takes on a different focus. Rather than rehash the atrocities committed by Germany, which have been depicted extensively, this film looks at the atrocities that have been brushed aside– the wartime chaos wreaked by the supposed good guys, namely the Soviet Allied Forces. Detailing the rape and harassment done towards the civilian populace, A Woman in Berlin bears witness to the lengths women had to resort to to secure their safety, and the way their scars have not been treated with the same care given to the men on the frontlines.

Raw SlowFar from Men 2015

Far from Men adapts Albert Camus’ The Guest, but while the events of the story occurred half a century ago, the absurdist themes in the face of political upheavals continue to resonate long after its publication. That’s because, as with many stories, Daru is called to make a choice. Here, in the Algerian War of Independence, Daru is tasked to take an Arab prisoner named Mohamed to the police in Tinguit. To do so means Mohamed’s death, but to refuse means to go against what is supposed to be his side. Keeping this moral dilemma intact while updating some key elements, this adaptation may erase some of the ambiguities that were in the original story. Doing so, however, grounds their journey with its political realities, helped by the knowledge of what the country has since transformed to. Far from Men understands the conflict Camus faced as a Frenchman born in Algeria, while demonstrating the futility of remaining neutral.

Funny ThrillingTai Chi Master 1993

Based on the legendary Zhang Sanfeng, Tai Chi Master recreates the myth surrounding his beginnings of his craft and transforms it into an energetic action flick. It’s rather entertaining. While tai chi is mostly practiced more as a meditative exercise, the fact that it’s a martial art provides the perfect excuse to see Jet Li fight. And he does deliver. Every showdown between him and Chin Siu-ho is unpredictable, over-the-top, and downright fun, with both their characters fighting for their diverging goals. While the later portion struggles to balance between the comedic tone it set earlier and the drama of the brothers’ separation, ultimately Tai Chi Master delivers all the wirework and action you could ask for, and then some.

Character-driven Discussion-sparkingThe Home and the World 1984

Given its status as a classic novel, The Home and the World was a tough story to adapt. The novel was written by India’s most revered writer Rabindranath Tagore, so the film has to honor the prose, and on top of that, it wrangles with the turbulent history of the early 20th century, the very same history that led to India’s revolution against colonial rule. Filmmaker Satyajit Ray was thankfully up to the task. Reintroducing the story generations later, the film beautifully depicts the marriage between traditionalist Bimala and her Western-education noble husband Nikhil, as well as her political liberation when she meets Nikhil’s more radical friend Sandip. Ghare-Baire masterfully grapples with that tug-of-war that changed India’s fate.

Funny ThrillingA Hard Day 2014

After accidentally hitting a homeless man with his car on the way to his mother’s wedding, Detective Ko Gun-su is certainly having A Hard Day. No one would blame him if he took the next day off and took some time for himself. However, he doesn’t do that. Instead, he reacts so differently, leading to a series of increasingly chaotic consequences. It makes for an unpredictable crime thriller, finding some humor in the way he continues to dig himself further into trouble, while cathartically letting karma play out with each morally dubious action. A Hard Day is so fun to watch.

Funny ThrillingPonies 2026

Ponies is a fun ride. Centered on two widows who lost their CIA husbands, the unexpected spy series puts their duo into some wacky hijinks as they try to figure it out at a time where one wrong move can launch a world war. That’s because it remembers the world just got out of one. It is set in the Cold War, after all. The show sets believable weight to the stakes the two women face by putting into perspective the kind of world these spies were working with. And so, with this strong sense of setting, Bea and Twila feel more like real people than the serious super spy or the adventurous James Bond-type. Combined with the surprising chemistry between Emilia Clarke and Haley Lu Richardson, breaking out of type, Ponies finds humor and fun in the uncertainty of the time.

FunnyCode 3 2025

Code 3 is a comedy about a crazy night out, though the craziness doesn’t stem from drunkenness, drugs, or bad decisions– it comes from the way anything can happen in the shift of a paramedic. And we mean, anything. That means the needle stabbing and projectile vomiting occurs organically. But the crazy night that happens isn’t presented for comedy’s sake only. At the heart of the humor is the understanding of how thankless the job can get, and how much strain the healthcare system is handling even without a pandemic. Code 3 acknowledges their troubles and rightfully honors their work.

TouchingThe Son’s Room 2001

The Son’s Room is about grief, but there’s something refreshing about the way it depicts how the family navigates it, and what gets them to move forward to the end. The drama seems like a simple story at first. Starting at the principal’s office where Andrea gets in trouble, writer-director Nanni Moretti mostly observes the family, leaving us blindsided for what’s to come. It’s because of this scene that Andrea is never seen as this perfect hero haunting the narrative. This introduction lays the groundwork for him to feel like a real boy, someone that we can plausibly think of as family. And when the incident happens, and Giovanni and Paola recall that day, the retracing and the subconscious ticks that hint at their grief hits harder than the melodramatic outbursts we’ve seen in other dramas like this. Ultimately, The Son’s Room simply works because it takes a straightforward story and treats it with care.

Touching UpliftingSuperboys of Malegaon 2025

Based on the life of a real small town filmmaker, this coming-of-age film is a familiar underdog story. After their small movie theater shut down due to piracy, Nasir and his friends decide to create their own, in spite of not having the money or connections to do it. You can probably tell what happens next, given the numerous films about artists with humble beginnings. But despite the tropes, the rushed reconciliation, and not delving into some of the religious tension behind Nasir’s retirement, Superboys of Malegaon still feels refreshing, because it truly understands why the underdog is so compelling. With only their love for the craft to guide them, these boys capture the fun and wonder of making films in their own community, for their own community. Superboys of Malegaon truly listened to their story.

EasyRental Family 2025

Since the 1990s, Japan has offered the service of pretending to be one’s family, friend, or lover. Rental Family isn’t the first time the West has ever depicted this service, but at a time of increased isolation, division, and loneliness worldwide, the very concept directly addresses that need for perceived connection. Why is there a need to fake it, rather than to form it for real? With Hollywood’s own Brendan Fraser, this comedy-drama considers how that perception has been tied closely to the outcomes of one’s life, gently recognizing how difficult it is to balance it with other concerns. Rental Family doesn’t fully resolve its client characters, but like director Hikari’s previous work, it asks its audience to reconsider the notions surrounding the rental family service.

Character-driven Discussion-sparkingDeath by Lightning 2025

Out of all the presidents in American history, you’ll be hard pressed to remember James A. Garfield. That’s because the man barely made it past six months before he was assassinated. Perhaps it’s because of this that there aren’t many expectations for this historical limited series, other than period sets and costumes, which is done well. But Death by Lightning goes beyond just documenting the guy’s life, as well as the life of his murderer. Instead, the series delves into the ways both men focused on their legacy, for better or worse, pushing the wheel to bring the changes they have fought for, but also prematurely ending their potential impact on the nation. Death by Lightning is fascinating work, one that turns this forgotten president into an important warning for today’s changemakers.

Funny ThrillingBoots 2025

Inspired by The Pink Marine memoir, Boots expands on Greg Cope White’s story to widen its perspective from one recruit to a whole troop. It makes it a team effort, rather than a solo stint. With the different faces and the protagonist’s sexuality, this show updates the classic military show for this generation, but the change works mostly because of an interest in the whole ensemble, letting its relative newcomers play off each other and show off their strengths. And that’s in spite of the times this show was released in. It’s a shame that Netflix hasn’t greenlit this gem for a second season, considering that these guys prove their mettle in each of their performances. Boots has more ground to stomp on, if only certain companies had the same balls the creators here did.
