Tonight, Fernandez goes head-to-head with Spain's Paula Badosa, who is ranked 7th in the eyes of the WTA. The winner will advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament tomorrow.

How did Leylah Fernandez advance to the Round of 16?

Fernandez's road to the Round of 16 has been an interesting one. 

After a bye in the Round of 128, she squared off against rising American Amanda Anisimova in the Round of 64. Fernandez lost the first set but bounced back with a 7-6 win in set two. However, Anisimova quit after the second set, saying after the match that she felt ill and could not continue.

It gave Fernandez the win, advancing to the Round of 32, where she handled Shelby Rogers to punch her ticket to tonight's match.
