Long live the vibe movie, which is hard to pinpoint, exactly, but you know it when you see it. The rather unscientific subgenre is usually classified by anything shot on film, a nonlinear plot, or anything headlined by Paddington. We don't make the rules. (By the way, not every film that has a vibe is a vibe movie. For example: The Batman is, in fact, a vibe, but it is not a vibe movie.)

Anyway. It so happens that the vibe movie of all vibe movies, Paul Thomas Anderson's Licorice Pizza, is up for three Academy Awards this year: Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. Not only that, but Licorice Pizza just took home the prize for Best Comedy at the Critics' Choice Awards, edging out the likes of Don't Look Up and The French Dispatch, which is quite a feat. Now, if you haven't had the treat of seeing Licorice Pizza, it is neither about licorice nor pizza—rather, it's a sweet coming-of-age-ish story set in 1970s California. Both of Licorice Pizza's leads, Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman, are stellar enough that we'll surely see more of them down the road. Bradley Cooper also has a memorable spot as film producer Jon Peters, who is dating Barbra Streisand during the events of the film.

If you want to vibe along with what's surely one of Anderson's greatest works, you only have two ways to watch. If you look hard enough, you may still be able to find a showtime at a theater near you—as with most of the Best Picture nominees, Licorice Pizza is still on the odd big screen or two. Otherwise, you'll have to buy Licorice Pizza for $20 on Amazon Prime. Unfortunately, we don't know when the film will be available to rent. The bright side? You'll own the film forever after you make the splurge. Plus, you'll be all the better for the two-plus hours you spent in PTA world.
