Support Home Vehicle Support OnStar Dealership Service Account Shopping Back to Smartphone IntegrationIf your vehicle is equipped with available Wireless Charging,* you can charge your smartphone in your vehicle without a charging cable. Here are instructions and tips for using Wireless Charging.
How to use it
- Turn on the vehicle or put it in Accessory mode.
- Remove objects from the charging pad or pocket.
- Remove any objects from the back of your phone/phone case.*
- Place the phone face up on the coil charging symbol on the pad or in the pocket. The phone needs to be fully on the charging pad or in the charging pocket. It must be lined up properly or it won’t work.
- You’ll see the charging symbol display on the phone when it’s charging.
*Note: Phone cases should not have card holders, finger holders or other metal objects on its back surface. These objects can interfere with the Wireless Charging system, causing them to heat up or disrupt the charging process.
Tips
- Wireless Charging only operates when your vehicle’s ignition is set to On, Accessory or Retained Accessory Power (RAP).
- The location of the charging pad varies by model. Common locations include the front of the center console, top of the center console armrest, or in a small vertical pocket or bin near the gear shifter. Check your vehicle Owner’s Manual for more information.
- If your phone is not charging, remove it, rotate it 180 degrees and place it back on/in the wireless charging pad or pocket.
- Your phone may not charge while in a protective cover or case. If you’re having problems, try removing your phone’s case. Thick phone cases may disrupt the charging process.
- Large phones may be too big to be charged on the charging pad.
- Small phones, foldable phones or other wearable devices may be too small to be lined up on the charging pad. These objects may slide around while driving. You may need to fully remove the device from the charging pad or pocket before repositioning it.
For your security, please don’t include personal info such as phone number, address or credit card details.
Q&As
Why does my phone get hot while charging?
This is normal. The phone temperature increases with the process of charging and phone usage. The phone will self-regulate and only request power as it needs it. The charger does not force energy into the phone.
Why does my phone stop working or charging when it’s hot in the vehicle?
Some phones have built-in thermal protection to conserve battery life when they get hot. This is normal behavior for the phone and not a defect of the charging pad or pocket. Closing background apps may help the phone use up less energy.
Even with my phone fully inserted, why does my phone struggle to connect?
Some phones and phone cases have built-in magnets and camera protection ribs. These features can cause interference on a fully inserted phone. You may need to rotate the phone or even pull the phone away from the walls slightly.
