How to wish someone a happy Eid al-Fitr
'Eid Mubarak' is widely sued as a way to wish someone a happy Eid al-Fitr. It is an Arabic term which translates to ‘blessed feast/festival’.
Traditionally, the phrase has been used by Arab Muslims but has spread across both Eids. Today, it is often used as a greeting during the holiday period.
It is more of a cultural tradition rather than a religious obligation. It is a phrase used internationally, especially in the UK, and is now seen as a social greeting.
What is Eid al-Fitr?
Eid al-Fitr is a celebration of the end of Ramadan and the period of fasting. Ramadan sees Muslims fast for either 29 or 30 days, depending on moon sightings that are used to calculate exactly when the holy month ends. It is also a time to give up pleasures such as smoking, alcohol and even sex, as well as spending more time in prayer.
Eid al-Fitr sees families and friends come together for a festival in which people enjoy good food and new clothes again. Sweets, dates and confectionaries are typically treats to enjoy during Eid al-Fitr.

Is Eid al-Fitr a public holiday?
Eid al-Fitr isn’t an official holiday in the UK, but it does fall on one this year, which is perfect for people to get involved in the celebration. It is the May bank holiday on Monday, May 2 and this happens to be the day Eid al-Fitr falls on in 2022.
Sometimes Ramadan only lasts 29 days but due to estimates on when it will end in 2022 based on moon sightings, it is lasting the full 30 days this year. Muslims across the UK will be able to enjoy a full day off for the holy festival.
