How Would You Describe The Taste Of Celery? Via Celery - Foodstand

OPEN IN THE APP 12 Question 9yr How would you describe the taste of celery? Via Celery: Why? : The Salt : NPR

I've always thought of celery as a dip delivery mechanism, or a crunch provider, and have been a bit confused by its popularity because I can't describe its flavor. I usually think of it as "watery"

  • darkchocolatepeanutbutter darkchocolatepeanutbutter 9yr I know it's supposed to be good for detoxifying the liver but I still struggle to eat it. Too bland for me 😪
  • munchiemummy munchiemummy 9yr Home grown and wild celery have such a strong flavour! I do find it hard to describe though. I have childhood memories of snacking on the celery that grew beside my grandmother's house. It was almost... Peppery?
  • DietID_TeamDietitians DietID_TeamDietitians 9yr Ahh yes farmers market celery had a much more pronounced "bite"
  • ibikeforfood ibikeforfood 9yr The leaves are soooo good in salads!
  • DietID_TeamDietitians DietID_TeamDietitians 9yr I've never had the leaves?! I got scared bc I know rhubarb leaves are poisonous and celery & rhubarb are cut from the same cloth
  • munchiemummy munchiemummy 9yr @Rachna nooo they're delicious don't be afraid! They're almost like an herb - so much flavour!
  • JenniferEmilson JenniferEmilson 9yr I have an amazing celery soup recipe- I love the savoury flavour of celery.
  • terryhope terryhope 9yr I adore celery! I even love celery root. I find the flavors a bit salty, bitter, mildly "green", somewhat blunt but yet it plays well with others (vegetables). Mirepoix without celery is just carrots and onions 🌱
  • DietID_TeamDietitians DietID_TeamDietitians 9yr Good points @terryhope @JenniferEmilson @munchiemummy! Will try the leaves and roots. And totally agree - the celery onion carrot combo is foundational
  • SabrinaCarro SabrinaCarro 9yr Celery has never been my favorite, but I would call fresh celery crisp and bitter; however, I consider cooked celery slightly sweet
  • etsummer etsummer 9yr I had a cocktail last week with celery juice in it. The juice definitely concentrates the flavor but yeah I still can't pin my finger on how I would describe it!
  • DietID_TeamDietitians DietID_TeamDietitians 9yr @SabrinaCarro definitely some sweetness when cooked. I made a leek and celery galette and it was very tart/sweet, and it wasn't just the leeks
