Kids say this anime is an intense experience that varies significantly in appropriateness depending on the season, with early episodes being relatively tame and later arcs, particularly the Chimera Ant arc, featuring graphic violence and complex themes. While many appreciate the story and character development, they warn that it's best suited for older children, around 12 years and up, especially due to occasional mature content and instances of suggestive themes involving older characters and young protagonists.

What's the Story?

Based on the manga series created by Yoshihiro Togashi, HUNTER X HUNTER is an anime series about a young boy's quest to follow in his father's footsteps. Gon wants to become a Hunter like his father, who left him and his mother when he was very young. He is passionate about the work, and has the potential to be good at it. But to become a Hunter he must pass the difficult and risky Hunter Qualification Examination. As Gon sets sail towards the remote examination site, he meets Kurapika and Leorio, two applicants who immediately demonstrate that they, too, have the necessary talent and bravery to pass the test. The journey is hard, but for Gon it's also an adventure, and one that will bring him closer to his dad.

Is It Any Good?

Our review: Parents say (14 ): Kids say (30 ):

This adventure-themed series has all the elements of an fun teen-oriented anime series. Gon is a lively, kind, and passionate protagonist, and the examination acts as a hero's journey, the end of which will lead him to his desired place among the Hunters. But Hunter x Hunter also has substance, and offers viewers life lessons, which are contextualized in a way designed to help Gon and his friends understand who they are, and what their lives will be look if they make it through. Overall, the series is an upbeat and adventurous story world that offers some interesting food for thought.
