The hunt is on

The calendar tells us when hunting season in Michigan begins, but our instincts already know and with more than 10 million acres of land open to public hunting and 111 wildlife management areas statewide, your perfect spot is waiting to be discovered.

Hunting is a time-honored tradition that calls enthusiasts of all ages to head for the woods and waters for the chance to track whitetail deer, elk, bear, turkey, grouse, waterfowl and other wildlife.

The opportunity to hunt and harvest game is abundant to all and, with various seasons spanning throughout the year, the opportunity to get lost in a sportsman’s paradise is always calling. Firearm season for whitetail deer is the season hunters across the state look forward, however Michigan is among the leading states in the nation for upland bird hunting, particularly ruffed grouse and woodcock.

Plan a hunt at one of 19 grouse enhanced management sites (GEMS) in the state or go on an ambitious quest for three species (turkey, ruffed grouse and whitetail deer) in 72 hours. Are you ready to test your skill in Pure Michigan?

With open hunting season occurring on public and private lands at all times Aug. 1-March 31, please consider wearing blaze orange (often referred to as “hunter orange”) when you’re out on the trails, especially during archery and regular firearm deer seasons.

While hunters do look out for those outdoors, they are especially in tune with this highly visible color. Don’t forget a hunter orange bandana, leash or harness for your pet, too!
