Ahhh, the ole “I thought Lip went to MIT” conundrum. We’ve seen this many times over the past year. Wow, has it really been almost a year since season four debuted? Geez Louise time sure flies when you’re obsessing over Shameless.

Fear not Anon, you are not alone in your confusion. At the end of season three, Lip told Mandy he got into MIT, except when season four started up Lip was nowhere near MIT. Nope, Lip was actually attending a school a little closer to home, Chicago Polytechnic.

Which we are assuming is the fictional stand-in for the University of Chicago. Stand-ins are used quite often when a show is unable to obtain permission to use the name of said college. Remember how Rory Gilmore went to Yale, but Joey Potter went to Worthington? Well, this is the same thing.

Now why didn’t Lip just go to MIT if he had a full-ride? Good question. As you noted MIT is not anywhere near Chicago, so if he were to have gone there it would have meant writing him off the show. And we all know that was not about to happen.

So they did the next best thing and that was to have Lip go to college a little closer to home. While they didn’t expressly say this on screen it wouldn’t be a stretch to infer Lip had incorrectly assumed full-tuition meant full-ride. Believe it or not this is a common mistake made by both graduating seniors and their families.
